Could be TOC corruption.
A possible rescue (how to fix and/or delete a TOC in resource fork,
before "compacting" destroys the entire mailbox) might be found in:
"How to Fix Corrupt Eudora Mailboxes"
http://db.tidbits.com/article/9545 [04 Apr 2008]
In the longer term, it appears better, according to reports,
to convert to using TOC files, instead of resource forks.
A user has recently posted the following info to a mailing list,
which I simply copy below (as I can't test or verify it):
--- Begin quoted material [with notes] ---
1. In Miscellaneous settings, tick the checkbox to use "old style" TOC's.
2. Quit Eudora, open the Spool Folder inside the Eudora Mail folder,
and delete In.temp and Out.temp.
3. Launch Eudora. Rebuild all the mailboxes by option-clicking
the message count box in the lower corner of any open mailbox window
[be sure to "fix" any already-corrupted mailboxes before doing this!]
The reason for step 2 is that step 3 did not suffice
to convert In.temp and Out.temp to separate TOC files.
This has eliminated all my problems with Eudora crashing in Leopard.
[see "Notice to OS X 10.5 'Leopard' users"
on http://www.eudora.com/download/ for more necessary info]
The only unsolved idiosyncrasy is that sometimes the Task Progress
window shows "cleaning up" indefinitely after checking mail.
The fix for this is to simply check mail again.

Open (for instance) the 'In' mailbox.
In list view, the message count is in the bottom margin of the window,
to the left. In my Inbox it says 406/1254K/72K. Option click on any part
of that and you'll see a small progress window that opens to show you
Eudora cycling through all the mailboxes- here, it took a few seconds.
At the end of this, the line now shows 406/1254K/0K. That 0K shows that
the mailbox has been rebuilt and compacted. Looking at any of the other
mailbox list windows will show you that they have been similarly
compacted.
In the good old bad old days of Eudora 1.n to 3.n this was a little
housekeeping ritual yo be done by hand. Later Eudoras do it
automagically when the the mailboxes need it.

There are message boards for Odysseus on the Infinity Data Systems
website:
<http://www.infinitydatasystems.com/forums/index.php>
The program is currently undergoing beta testing, and I don't think it
is yet ready for regular use. There is a lot of discussion on the
forums that is only visible to the beta testers. At this point, you'd
have to email IDS to ask for access to the beta and to be able to post
to the beta testing forums.
