Is the conversion to or from old style .toc files likely to correct
errors in email metadata -- screwed up Subject: lines in particular?
Specific case at hand: My wife moved her Eudora folder (which
had not been using .toc files) from a nonstandard location on her
MacBook Leopard to the Documents folder, as recommended.
Now the Subject: lines in mailbox windows seem to be mixed up,
i.e. no they no longer match up with actual messages.
Is checking the "Use old style .toc files" preference and
rebuilding (compressing) mailboxes likely to correct this?

I think so, but I'd definitely play it safe and have a backup copy just
in case it makes matters worse instead of better. If it doesn't work,
it should be possible to fix using a text editor, but that's likely to
be really tedious.

Unless changing that option rebuilds the TOC (rather than just relocate it),
I would fear compressing to be more likely to irrevocably damage a mailbox
(the same as it does on Windows), because the mis-matching TOC
will cause copying of the wrong sections of mailbox data.
An interesting new article (04 Apr 2008):
"How to Fix Corrupt Eudora Mailboxes"

I would "fix" first (by deleting mis-matched resource fork),
then change option (hopefully to less often corrupt TOCs in future
by not using resource forks, although reports differ).
