Un-asked-for mailboxes?

Recently I've starting seeing a few unwanted mailboxes mysteriously
appearing in my Mailboxes folder -- always empty, not names I recognize,
though I suppose they may have come from spam or junk emails that passed
by me too rapidly to be noticed.

Any way to block these, or any thing to look for that might be causing
them?

MacBook, Leopard, Eudora 6.2.4, university popserver.

Are you maybe creating filters and accepting the default action of
"transfer to new mailbox sender@some.isp"?  That would create an empty
mailbox with a name that looks like an email address.

That was my first thought, too. I've done that accidentally several
times while trying to create a filter that would highlight messages
from a certain sender in a certain color.
