But isn't that terribly expensive?
Of course, for those that already have it, BBEdit does the job too.

Quite so.

Or its predecessor BBEdit Lite.

I recommend Macs to my friends, and Windows machines
to those whom I don't mind billing by the hour

Apparently I didn't quite express what I was looking for,
which is not the name of a program to use on the Mac
(since we already have one to use on the Windows side anyway),
but rather the information as to _which_type_ of line endings
do or do not work for Eudora under OS X,
and any other details that have to be attended to,
to make conversion from Windows mailboxes work.
Thus far I have found the thread below,
which seems to suggest leaving line endings
as for "Classic" Mac (CR only), but please
do let me know if "Unix" (LF only) also works or not,
for running Eudora 6.2.4 under OS X.
At present, each mailbox is being taken to be one single,
gigantic message, rather than being a collection of many individual messages,
and that's what lead me to suspect that this issue might be involved.
There also seemed to be details posted
about needing to change or specify the Mac file type,
and I was wondering whether that was also a necessary extra step,
thanks.
The thread I had found was:
"Win98 Eudora5.2 to MacOSX Eudora6.2 conversion problem" [Dec 2004]

I don't know if the Unix line endings will work, but the "Classic" Mac
endings definitely will. Since they do, I suspect the Unix line endings
won't.

I'm not sure, but I think not. If the file is not automatically
recognized by Eudora, you can set Eudora as the application to use for
opening the file. (Select the file in the Finder and choose "Open
with..." under File, or "Get info" under File and set Eudora as the
application.) You do need to have the file (or an alias pointing to it)
where Eudora expects to find it, which would be under ~/Documents/Eudora
Folder/Mail folder.
