Alert sound

I'm using Eudora 6.1.1, in OS10.4.11. Previously I was running 10.3.9. I
upgraded yesterday. Everything is fine except...

I have the 'getting attention' alert sound set to 'Attention.aiff',
which is a short aiff file that I made, and which lives in
~/library/sounds/

It also lives in HD/sounds/alert sounds.

It worked fine in OS10.3.9, but in 10.4.11 the alert sound appears to be
fixed on 'funk', whatever I change it to in 'Settings'.

My Eudora New Mail sound is also set to an aiff file I made, and that
plays fine when new mail appears.

Any thoughts? I'm sure that the Eudora alert sounds need to be aiff
files, but where should they live?

You can place them in any "Sounds" folder within a "Library":

Macintosh HD > Library > Sounds

Macintosh HD > Users > Peter > Library > Sounds

Macintosh HD > System > Library > Sounds  (authorisation required)

My Eudora seems them just fine separated with a delimiter line depending
on location.

I have used Eudora since 1990 or so. I long ago (>10 years) put a
"You've Got Mail!" aiff in my Eudora (I have forgotten just where in OS8
& 9) but in OSX I have had it in both root library/sounds  and for years
now in ~/library/sounds/ and it has worked perfectly.

Not happy about Eudora being orphaned but I will continue to use it
until some OS change breaks it. 17+ years is long time to give it up.

I totally agree and I hope these guys will succeed building a worthy
successor:

D'oh.

It's one of the things that's changed in the system; it now has to be
selected also in the general sound prefs. Not so before. And so it works
fine now.
