550 Error

I have two mail accounts on the same server, each with a Eudora
personality.

One account is my main account which is used for sending and receiving
mail, which I do with no problems.

The other account is only used for sending mail; I never check its mail,
and don't want to check its mail.  I used to be able to do this with no
trouble, but now whenever  I try to send mail I get the following error:

"Couldn't send message; server says 550 SMTP AUTH required before
submission".

Both personalities have the same SSL and sending mail settings ("Allow
authorization" is checked.)  The only difference seems to be that on the
main account, mail is checked as well as sent, while on the other
account, mail is never checked.

Is there something else I'm missing?  Why won't this work?

Thanks

Alan

I would ask the ISP first, re the difference between my two accounts
(no, they are not "identical," because they have different login names,
which at the ISP end can have different properties).

By the way, if you have two accounts with the same ISP,
why not always use the same working outgoing account?
(that's what "SMTP Relay" is for -- to use one working
SMTP path for all personalities).

Thanks.  While the two accounts aren't functionally different, this did
get me thinking about my settings again, and it turns out that on the
second account, the "User name" was set to the real name rather than the
login name of the account.  Since this was in the "checking mail" part
of the preferences and I was never checking mail for that account, I
hadn't noticed the problem.  Fixing this fixed the problem.

For my purposes, it doesn't make much difference now.

Thanks again.

I would try checking its mail once.  That has worked for me.

Thanks.  I knew that this would work, but (for independent reasons)
didn't want to ever check mail for this account.  But your message and
another posting got me back to checking the "checking mail" settings for
the account in questions, which it turns out were incorrect.  Fixing
this solved the problem.

Thanks for your help.

Yeah, it's a bit of an oddity -- you wouldn't think that the "checking
mail" settings matter if you're not checking mail and only sending, but
they (obviously) do matter.  Glad to hear you've got things working
again.

(As you've probably guessed, I don't use the "relay personality" either.
I know I had a reason at the time for doing things this way, but I no
longer remember what it was).

Because "checking" is where the "User [login] name" appears,
which does not appear again in the "sending" settings category
(only one "User [login] name" is provided per personality,
which is why one has to "use an SMTP relay personality"
to define any different user name for sending than for receiving).

It's probably the Eudora manual author's fault that someone would
enter his spelled-out name into the "User [login] name" field,
because the illustration in the manual, under "Getting started,"
shows "Arnold Palmer" (well, actually there's a small "."
between the first and last name, but whose reading glasses
are sharp enough to spot that? :)
