The Penelope team has announced a new beta, 8.0.0b2:

<http://wiki.mozilla.org/Eudora_Releases>

Personally, I'm starting to think that the Odysseus project (see
<http://www.infinitydatasystems.com/products/odysseus/index.html>) is
much more promising as a Eudora successor than Penelope is, but I pass
along the information for those who might be interested.  I'm going to
continue to track both horses, just in case.

After deserting Eudora after about 10 years and using Thunderbird for
some month, I think I found the perfect Eudora successor: Mailsmith.
I am currently trying out the 2.2 betas and I think they have a lot of
the look and feel of good old Eudora. Can´t wait till they release the
final version.

(Just my 2 Eurocent)

P.S.: Support is very responsive too.

P.P.S.: I am not in any way connected to Barebones. Just a satisfied
user.

Just to be clear about my previous message -- "Eudora successor" is
meant literally for both Odysseus and Penelope.  That is, both are
attempting to replicate the feature set that Eudora has.  Of course,
there are other programs, such as Mailsmith, that people might prefer,
but for those who are interested in Eudora's exact feature set (or
something very close), they should check out Odysseus and/or Penelope.
Both are still in development, obviously; supposedly, a beta is
forthcoming for Odysseus very soon.  I'll post here when it's out.

And similarly, I have no connection with Odysseus or Penelope.  I've
used BareBones' BBEdit for years, and swear by it, but never quite
warmed up to Mailsmith.  Maybe it's improved -- it's been a long time
since I looked at it.

New Eudora is not a revelation for me.
I renamed the new Eudora.app as I was afraid it would delete original
Eudora.
My primary ISP (Comcast) doesn't recognize my password.
I can't change my name in TO:  ie bolobar@gmail.com to
newname@gmail.com
Mailbox folders in the toolbar are a mess.
Would prefer classic interface.  I believe Odysseus will have option
of classic or mail.app like.

I am not a power user.  Is there any reason that I can't use Eudora in
the future? I read of all the switchers.
My OS is 10.5.1 and 'new' Eudora is much faster.  I suspect this is
due to 'old' using rosetta.

So far I have seen no reason to switch.  Eudora still works fine for me,
including on my Intel MacBook with 10.5.1 (although I did initially have
a keychain issue, quickly resolved.)  I don't notice the speed; I'm
usually doing several things at once and just let Eudora carry on in the
background, then alert me when it's ready.
