Problems with messages from Apple Mail

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble receiving messages with attachments from Mail users.
It might have started with the new Mail under Tiger, but I'm not quite
sure.

Sometimes the entire message appears duplicated, the upper half only
containing a textual reference to the attachment and the bottom half
displaying the attachment inline.

In other cases Eudora complains about "encoding errors" and suggests to
fetch the attachment again from the IMAP server, which usually fixes it.

In rare cases the attachment is being converted to a load of garbage
characters in the body of the message. In those cases the only way to
retrieve the attachment unharmed is to use the account's web interface.

Now I know for certain that some of these Mail users have had ongoing
complaints from Windows colleagues not receiving attachments either,
which leads me to suspect that the problem is with Mail or their server.

Anyone else seeing this?  Is Mail broken?

I am seeing the first problem that you mention (the duplication
problem).  It only seems to happen when there are styles in the message
AND an attachment.  And like you, I've pinned it down to Mail users.  I
agree that it wasn't always this way... starting with Tiger seems about
right.

I haven't seen the other problems you mention, but I am using POP rather
than IMAP, which may make a difference?

Now, as for fixes, I don't have one, but I wish someone did....

Probably. I'm quite grateful for IMAP in this case as I can fetch
messages and attachments again to fix it.

Just had another case with attachments turned into garbage characters.
This time I tried retrieving from the server repeatedly and the third
attempt did the trick.

So do I, still wondering why Mail is in my case the only client that
creates these sort of problem mails.

Maybe, if we're lucky, they'll be fixed in Leopard.  But I'm not holding
my breath.

Neither am I. At least the new Mail finally has a stationery feature,
although Apple's idea of stationery is more like wallpaper.  ;-)
