I was able to send and receive some mail. Didn't try importing my
existing mail. But it was easy to crash.

That's good enough for me to hold back...thanks.

It is a new program. To name it b1 release is rather optimistic at this
point - but it is good to see a progress.
I did not find a reason to switch at that time - may be in a year or so.
It will need hard work, to be better than Eudora... :-)

As far as I can tell, it's Thunderbird with some Eudora icons.  If there's
anything actually Eudora-ish about it, I didn't notice.

The Who column. Although I'm told there is a Thunderbird extension or
plugin which does that, it doesn't work properly. I didn't test this
beta (alpha, really) long enough to see whether the Who column worked
properly.

The Who column is a BIG deal for me and one of the main reasons I
haven't migrated to Thunderbird. I've organized my mailboxes assuming
that the Who column works properly. You can have a lot fewer mailboxes
because you can dump all the people in a category in the same mailbox.
Then, sorting by "Who" will do the right thing (your sent messages are
interleaved with the received messages).

I sure hope Penelope stabilizes.  In the meantime, Eudora is not
broken.

Perhaps not for you.

Eudora does not understand how to be an IMAP client. It gets the
protocol reasonably right, but its behavior in handling mail is idiotic.

Eudora used to have reasonable cryptographic support, but it was left to
rot and was broken in version 6.

TBird has those two issues dealt with, but unfortunately has a long list
of other problems. Penelope fails to fix the real problems, and adds a
glaze of "gee, this kinda looks like Eudora" that really makes very
little real difference.

Alt-click is enabled for group selection -- alt-click on a subject to
select all messages in that mailbox and move them adjacent to the
message clicked.  That's a Eudora feature I value, and I understand
Thunderbird doesn't normally have it.

It's not a beta. It is a pre-alpha at best.

All of Tbird's bugs on the Mac (which are MANY and BAD) are there, plus
the Penelope extension has *worse* importers than stock TBird.  A big
disappointment.

I think the focus of Penelope development has been quite wrong. One
thing that keeps Eudora users on Eudora is its maturity: it works, it
almost always works correctly, and where it is wrong it is wrong in
well-known and predictable ways. Rather than making TBird behave well,
Penelope worsens its stability, worsens its functionality, and makes it
look a little more like stock Eudora graphically.

See Adam Engst's TidBITS review:

(Adam, in addition to being the co-founder of TidBITS, the most
excellent weekly mac newsletter, has often publicly declared himself to
be a longtime Eudora user).

Adam *is* a longtime Eudora user, and he's the primary reason that I
began using it years ago after purchasing my first Mac.  That was a
Performa 6115CD I bought in 1995, and about a year later I bought his
book called "The Internet Starter Kit" which included a Eudora Light
installer.  I've used Eudora ever since.  And I continue to subscribe to
TidBITS as well.
