Server responds on standard POP port 110 (no SSL):
telnet 62.241.162.110 110
+OK POP3 Ready galaxy 0001e855
user nobody
+OK USER nobody set, mate
pass xxxxxxxx
-ERR Re-Authentication Failure
QUIT
+OK QUIT
Actually there are four different servers using that name,
so you might get different ones on different attempts,
but I get responses every time, when using the name
in place of the address:
> nslookup pop.dsl.pipex.com
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: pop.dsl.pipex.com
Addresses: 62.241.162.110, 62.241.162.111, 62.241.163.102, 62.241.163.103

Puzzling.

In your case it might be Eudora is not sending first packet?
Try new personality? Try a new settings file? Reinstall Eudora?
Cheers,
Darrell

That's what it looks like.

Already tried a new personality, no better luck.
Tried a new settings file, and it works. There's obviously something
borked in my settings file. Probably about time I made a new one anyway,
that's the same settings file I've been using since around 1996. It's a
wonder it has survived this long.
A few days ago I deleted about ten personalities, and I guess that's
when the settings got broken.

Yes.
I don't suppose you have something like Little Snitch (good) or anything
calling itself a personal firewall (mostly a bad lot, particularly
Norton) that might be blocking Eudora selectively?

Now where did I hide that website...

It has to be some kind of corruption in the settings file. None of my
Pipex accounts work, but four out of five Gmail accounts work. There's
not much consistency about what works and what doesn't, so it seems that
the simplest thing will be to make a new settings file, and create the
necessary personalities in it.

My settings file was created in 1993, still there and working. Testimony to
the robustness of this incredible mail application :-)
