Old Eudora Nicknames files

There are at the minute 289 old "Eudora Nicknames.ab.cd.e.fg" files in
my  ~/Documents/Eudora/Spool Folder/  folder.

Can I trash those?

Can I set anything to limit how many of them accumulate before they age
out?

Email cc of any replies appreciated.  Thanks for any info.

Yes.

Not that I know of.  But you can stop them from being created altogether
by going to Settings->Really Miscellaneous and de-selecting the box for
"Backup nickname files".

Personally, I just make it part of my regular backup routine to delete
these files, as well as cache files from the browser, etc., before doing
a backup of my harddrive.

Do I read correctly here, Roberta, that you empty the whole of the Spool
Folder?

Just wondering, what the use of this amassing in the Spool Folder
anyway?

Well, I don't have Eudora back up my nicknames file, so I don't
accumulate as many files in there as you do.  (I have the box
de-selected in my Settings, as I explain above).  But I do accumulate
various other things in there.  I delete them all periodically, except
for the ones called "Out.temp" and "In.temp" -- and I could probably
delete those, too, but I don't out of simple paranoia.

Just backup files, I believe.  Someone else correct me if I am wrong.

Came to think of the X-Eudora-Settings.   :-)   When showering.
I found this:  "<x-eudora-setting:193> When checked, nicknames files
will be automatically backed up to Spool Folder in your Eudora Folder.
Use for debugging only."
That simplifies things for me and the last sentence explains a lot.

In connection with your next sentence, Roberta,
> > > Personally, I just make it part of my regular backup routine to delete

there is for the rest of the folder "<x-eudora-setting:194> Folders in
the spool folder will be removed after this many days.  Set to 0 to keep
items indefinitely." That might clean up your backup routine as well.
I found that it was set tot 30 days. I set it to 2 days. I don't know
why really, I guess it's because 'one never knows for what it might be
useful' - although up to now (9/11 years) I never needed it (the
paranoia thing?).

This setting is equivalent to the "Settings->Really
Miscellaneous->Backup nickname files" setting that I mentioned a few
posts back.

Thanks!  I didn't know about this setting.  Mine was blank, which is
probably equivalent to 0 (save forever).  Like you, I now have mine set
to 2.  :)

I know, I read that. I did the quote for the "Use for debugging only".
The fact that it was apparently checked by default surprised me.

The quote was also directed at the OP. He'll read it somewhat later -
guessing from the number of posts here lately.   :-)

Yes, it really hammers home the point that the setting need not be
checked.

Indeed -- very strange.
