Eudora 6.1.1 on Mac OS 9.2 - TCP/IP Error 3162

Hello...

I recently upgraded to Eudora 6.1.1 on my Mac OS 9.2.  To check mail
at my workplace, we were told to turn on SSL encryption, which I did.
However, my Incoming mail SSL doesn't seem to work (although SSL on
Outgoing is working fine).  Eudora throws a "TCP/IP Error: -3162 The
Server is not repsonding" error.

On the SSL setings page in Eudora, this is what I have:
SSL for POP: Required (Alternate Port)
SSL for STMP: Required (Alternate Port)
Standard SSL Port Negotiation: Maximum Compatibility
Alternate SSL Port Negotiation: Maximum Compatibility

I have a Keychain configured on the Mac, which has the security
certificate for the mail server.  So I am Ok on that end.

I think it should work after all these settings, but it doesnt.  I
even tried to set "Ports and Protocols" using Esoteric Settings,
changed POP3 port to 995, SMTP port to 465; still the same problem
with Incoming mail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Since outgoing is working for you, leave the outgoing (SMTP) settings as
they are. POP3 and SMTP are completely independent protocols.

There are four strong likelihoods for what is wrong.

1. Your workplace does not use SSL on an alternate port (normally 993)
for POP3 with SSL, but rather uses the 'TLS' model that allows the
initiation of an encrypted session on the standard POP3 port (110).

2. They do not encrypt POP3 at all, only SMTP ()outgoing mail) which
would be a bad practice but not uncommon.

3. They don't use POP3 at all, but IMAP. IMAP is a popular choice for
companies whose employees need to access their mail from multiple
machines, because the mail is stored on the server rather than pulled
down to the mail reader and deleted from  the server, which is normal
POP3 behavior.

4. You have the wrong server name for incoming mail. The -3162 error can
be the result of trying to lookup a name that does not exist.

Besides the suggestions from Bill Cole, you might try changing your
Timeout settings in Eudora.  Whatever the number is for "Response from
server" make it a larger number.
