Ports and Protocols

I was just comparing Eudora and Mail. It looks to me as if Mail will
allow the use of the standard POP and SMTP ports on one account but
alternate ones on another account, whereas Eudora will insist on only
one POP port and only one SMTP port.

Am I correct in this? There are situations in which it could make a
difference.

Again, make a second Settings file in which you specify the ports you
want. Have aliases of those Settings available. Just fire up the one you
want, without quitting Eudora. The change will happen instantly.

Or, use x-eudora-settings to set the port on a
personality-by-personality basis.  (All of Eudora's x-eudora-settings
can be set on a personality-by-personality basis.  Send a blank email to
x-eudora-settings@tidbits.com to get a full list of the settings and an
explanation of how to use the settings on a personality-by-personality
basis).

Many thanks. I din't know the trick of using the settings for a
particular personality.

Yeah, it's a cool feature that's not well-publicized (perhaps because
it's not something that the average user would want to fool with).

There is a "Personality Ports" plugin which adds a panel to Preferences
to allow you to specify the POP/SMTP/IMAP ports, and a few other
options, for each personality.

I understand this method, but I was wondering if I had missed something
hidden that would have enabled me to avoid it.

Well yes, there's Roberta's suggestion of using x-eudora-settings. It's
just that (1) I'm using Eudora in Light mode so I don't use
personalities and (2) I find my method easier to remember and to apply,
because I've been using multiple Settings files for years.

Since I only change my port settings every now and again, once I have
the appropriate x-eudora-settings, I save them in a text file.  Then,
when you need them again, you just open up the file in Eudora and the
links will be clickable.  Not a perfect solution for those of us with
spotty memories, but not bad either.

Sounds good enough to me.

I use some odd dialup ISPs in Geneva, several times a year, so on my
TiBook I have three sets of Eudora prefs aliased in a 'Comms' folder on
my desktop. It's almost quicker than thought to open it and double click
the 'Demon', 'Econophone' or 'Bluewin' settings.
