eudora 6.2.3 won't sent mail

Hi,

I am running OSX 10.3.9 and using Eudora 6.2.3, and recently including
right now I can receive mail, but can not send mail. It gets as far as Q
queing the outgoing mail but then has some kind of trouble interacting
with the SMTP server at Cox.net. this happened before in December. I do
not remember how I fixed it then. perhaps by downloading a new copy of
Eudora 6.x.x and using my purchased key to make it fully functional.

Anyway it is probably some file in the Eudora Folder that is corrupted.
I just do not know which file.

BTW I am able to send out going mail using Apple Mail. So it is not
Cox's fault.

There is something that gets screwed up with my Eudora client. Do you
know what to do to get it going again?

Grateful for your help,  John

PS. or is Eudora at the end of the road? I have been using it for
decades from the day it was first offered from Dorner. So I'd like to
keep using it, but if that is not to be, please let me know. Then I will
begin the awful process of switching to Mail or FireFox or whatever.

TIA   John

Eudora development has been discontinued, so you probably should grab a
copy of 6.2.4 before it disappears.  My guess is that Cox.net has
changed something in their SMTP authentication and you may (or may not)
need the newer version to be able to authenticate.

It may be that the Settings are corrupted.  If you have a good backup
Settings file, you could try using it.  If not, you can rebuild the You
can rebuild the Settings by holding down all the modifier keys
(command-option-shift-control) while you select Settings from the
Special menu.  This will retain your server info, but most of your other
customizations will be lost.  Before rebuilding the Settings, put a copy
somewhere outside the Eudora Folder so you can easily get it back if it
turns out the problem is not solved by rebuilding the Settings.

You can make it a little easier to restore your customizations if you
have Eudora create a list of them for you before you rebuild the
Settings.  Do this by opening a new message composition window and then
choose "Insert system configuration" from the Help menu.

Thank you, Kathy. That is terrific help. I am glad that there is hope
for my old friend, Eudora. I really am comfortable with her and would
hate to have to transfer years of correspondence and user comfort to
some other app. thanks again. that is just the info i needed.  john

I called Cox. They relayed me to someone in India who said nothing was
wrong with the server since I can send out going mail using another
email client, Mail. He referred me to Apple support. Well, Apple support
isn't open today for one thing. More importantly, they don't support
Eudora anyway. This news group is the only support for Eudora remaining.

I downloaded and installed 6.2.4. No change.

I swapped in a copy of Setting from a recent backup. No change.

Do you have any additional suggestions? It is bizarre, because Eudora
has been working for years with this same ISP with the same settings.
Also Mail works fine.

Is there another critical file that could have become corrupted?

Obviously one needs to be able to send email. I am struggling to keep
using Eudora. If I have to throw in the towel and go to another client,
which would you recommend? I have heard good things about Mail, but is
it the equivalent of Eudora?

Thanks for your help.

Apparently, the settings you use in Mail are slightly different from
those in Eudora. You should _carefully_ check them.

Maybe you could also tell us what Eudora tells you when it tries to send
the mails. What is the content of the error message?

It is - as I and others wrote earlier - not a problem of Eudora per se,
but a problem of incorrect configuration.

It happens sometimes that settings are changed "by accident", or that a
mail provider changes the setup of the server. However, the second
possibility is not probable since your other application works.

> Is there another critical file that could have become corrupted?

No, not a file. Check your settings carefully.

If you go away from Eudora to another mail application, it's your
choice. But if your settings are wrong there one day as well, would you
again change your application? _I_ wouldn't.

I am using Eudora since the times of the Mac Plus (some version 1.x of
Eudora), and it always worked.

Christian.

Define "some kind of trouble". Post the exact error message. Also, with
these type of problems it is useful to enable Eudora's logging function,
which will get you a transcript of the communication between Eudora and
the server.

(The fact that another mail client works does *not* mean the server
hasn't changed or that it is configured correctly. It is common for
companies to misconfigure servers; basing their caim that "it works"
simply on having done some testing with some "supported" clients.)

The SMTP error reported by Eudora is:

"Server not responding 1; {37:418}"

The other thing I remember this morning is that this malfunction of
Eudora may be correlated with a recent Apple Security Update to system
OSX 10.3.9.

Well then,

1) Maybe the SMTP server's name was spelled incorrectly
2) Maybe the SMTP server expects to be contacted on a different port
number
3) ...

A System update won't change any of your maill client's settings at all

the latest error message this morning is:

"Server not responding. -3260; {37:418}

Hope this helps clarify the problem.

Many thanks for the help. I do not know where else to turn. Cox denied
any problem at their end, though it was a tech from India. I will try
again and see if I can reach someone closer to the server itself who
might know of some software change over the weekend.

I must add that I just remembered this morning that I installed the most
recent Apple Security Update for 10.3.9 in the recent past, possibly as
recently as over the weekend when Eudora stopped sending mail. I can't
be sure of exactly when that install was done, but within the past few
days.

Why don't you ask Cox to send you (by mail or otherwise) the settings
details for your SMTP server? It is not necessarily something wrong with
them.

See my earlier post. No, it won't change your mail settings.

I called Eudora support and for $19.95 renewed my support for the next 6
months while the product still exists as such. The tech support fellow
determined that one of the messages I was trying to send was corrupted
in some way and was being rejected by the SMTP server. He had me delete
all outgoing unsent messages. After that the program now works again
perfectly.

Thank you for all your help. It is great to have a community of people
willing to give a helping hand. Me, I am so grateful to be able to
continue using Eudora. :-)

thanks again!!
