[Q] SMTP authentication and submission port 587

Hello everybody,

A friend of me has some problem with his ISP (tele2 in France), which
use now SMTP authentication and submission port 587.

He is on Classic, and so his Eudora is 6.1.1.

I tried first to configure his Eudora, but now I'm trying to configure
mine, which is 6.2.3 (I am on Tiger)

The ISP said me I have to use submission port 587 and to use an account
login (saying for example : cxu-xxx-yyy) and a password (saying zzzz).

1) In E 6.2.3,  I created a personality with :
 - in the Checking mail part : user name : cxu-xxx-yyy
       and mail server : pop.tele2.fr
       and no box is checked
 - in the Sending Mail part : Smtp server : smtp.tele2.fr
       and email address : myname@tele2.fr
and the three boxes are checked

When I try sending an email with this personality (giving the password
when I am requested to do it) it doesn't go.
And with LittleSnitch I can see than a request is made on port 465 (not
587) !
Do you know why this port ?

2) I uncheck then the box "Use submission port (587)" and modifie the
smtp server like this :   smtp.tele2.fr:587

When I try sending the email, this time the request is made on port 587,
but the email still doesn't go.

Have someone an idee of the reason ? Have I  vorgotten something ?

3) For E 6.1.1 there is no "Use submission port (587)" box.
Do you think it will work if I put :587 after the smtp server address
like in the point 2 ?

Try using these x-eudora-settings to set the port used by Eudora.  You
probably don't need to change the POP3 port, but I'm including it anyway
in case you need it.  I'm not sure, but I think they will work for both
versions of Eudora.  Some x-eudora-settings changed from one version to
another, but I think maybe these particular ones didn't change.

<x-eudora-setting:6820> Port used for POP3.
<x-eudora-setting:7211> Port for SMTP.

To use them, just paste them into a message window in Eudora and they
will turn into links.  Command-click on the link to get a dialog box
where you can set the port number.  No harm done if it doesn't work; you
can command click again and click on the button to revert to default.

Yes. I have forgotten to say that I tried also this Eudora-setting (with
E 6.2.3).
And this one too :
<x-eudora-setting:156>
Your SMTP server offers a login protocol that Eudora understands.

But il doesn't work.

Haven't you answers for my two others questions ?

Is that set as an alternate, perhaps? Or is this over SSL?

Why is he running mail under Classic vice X-native?

Can you telnet to that port:

    $ telnet smtp.tele2.fr 587
    Trying 212.247.156.12...
    Connected to smtp.tele2.fr.
    Escape character is '^]'.
    220 mailfe13.swip.net ESMTP 5.0.12

If youu fail at that, look at your firewall rules. Are you
blocking 587 upstream?

It should just as well...

The person probably wanted to write that (s)he uses MacOS 9 rather than
X - not the "Classic"  emulation of OS X.

I don't know. I think SSL has not to be enabled for this ISP, but I 'll
try that too.

> Why is he running mail under Classic vice X-native?

I'm afraid I'd have to say Mac OS 9, instead of Classic ;-) Sorry.

Yes. I tried this too. And I obtain the same as you.

No, I don't. Just watching on the upstream with Little Snitch.

OK.

Thanks a lot for your answer.

Hi

Try opening up Eudora Info in finder by selecting the Eudora
application and clicking Command-I. The turn on Esoteric Settings in
Plug-ins and then launch Eudora. Now there should be a Ports Setting
where you can specify things under Special > Settings

You should be able to see what is happening in the Eudora Log in the
Eudora Folder. You can also go into Settings and set what is  being
logged

Esoteric Settings was off (box not checked), but I have been using it
for a long time !!!...
Actually, I think it is because I have a French version of ES. The name
of it is "Paramètres ésotériques 6.0".

> Now there should be a Ports Setting
> where you can specify things under Special > Settings

OK. I've tried to put 587 in this Port Setting. And its the same.

> You should be able to see what is happening in the Eudora Log in the

I have the following messages :
1) If I check the box "Use submission port (587)" :

MAIN 8:0.11.17 cxu-xxx-yyy@pop.tele2.fr
MAIN 8:0.0.1 indiquer
MAIN 8:0.6.21 Dismissed with 1.
27985920 1:0.7.14 smtp.tele2.fr 465
27985920 8:0.8.29 Erreur TCP/IP.
27985920 8:0.8.29 -3162
27985920 8:0.8.29 Le serveur ne répond pas.
27985920 8:0.8.29   {37:583}
27985920 8:0.8.29 "Erreur TCP/IP. -3162; " "Le serveur ne répond pas.
{37:583}"
27985920 8:0.8.29 : -50

2) If I uncheck the box, but put :587  after the smtp server address :

27553280 1:0.20.56 smtp.tele2.fr 587
27553280 8:0.0.19 : -50

3) If I don't do that but put 587 in SMTP port of the Esoteric port
setting :

MAIN 8:0.50.2 cxu-xxx-yyy@pop.tele2.fr
MAIN 8:0.0.1 indiquer
MAIN 8:0.4.42 Dismissed with 1.
28785664 1:0.5.34 smtp.tele2.fr 587

(the word "indiquer" is corresponding to the password request dialog)

4) Actually I've found that the 465 port is only in the case where I
enable SSL. If I disactiv it I obtain  (in the first case) :

MAIN 8:0.51.0 cxu-xxx-yyy@pop.tele2.fr
MAIN 8:0.0.1 indiquer
MAIN 8:0.3.49 Dismissed with 1.
27075584 1:0.5.19 smtp.tele2.fr 567

with 567 port this time !!!...

5) Last try : I've tried to suppress the French version file ; and also
to disactivate Esotering Settings (It doesn't appair then :-). But It's
exactly the same, for sending email to tele2 ;-(

I'm afraid I'll give up soon.

Try increasing your server timeouts.  This setting is also in the
Esoteric Settings plugin (or in your case the Paramètres ésotériques
6.0).  Whatever the numbers are in the Timeouts setting, make them
larger. "Erreur TCP/IP. -3162; " "Le serveur ne répond pas" indicates
the server is slow to respond and Eudora is giving up, so tell Eudora to
wait longer before giving up.

Hum.. I think it doesn't respond anyway. The timeout is something like 1
minute. Imho it's very long for a server, and I have only this message
in this case, where E try to connect to port 465 instead of 587. I am
afread the server is not listening to this port...
I'll try anyway.
