The following notice has been added to
http://www.eudora.com/download/

WARNING: Sponsored mode in versions other than 7.1 (Win)
and 6.2.4 (Mac) will revert to light mode after March 31st.
Upgrade now to prevent reverting to Light mode.

Previous similar information was released in October 2006:

http://www.eudora.com/faq/

Do I have to upgrade to the open source version to stay with Eudora?

No, users can remain in any version of Paid or Light modes in perpetuity.
Sponsored mode users can upgrade to the Sponsored mode
version 7.1 for Windows Eudora or 6.2.4 for Mac
in order to remain in Sponsored mode in perpetuity.

Can I continue to use my Sponsored mode version of Eudora?

Sponsored mode users that upgrade to Eudora version 7.1 for Windows
and 6.2.4 for Mac will be able to remain in Sponsored mode in perpetuity.
QUALCOMM plans to stop trafficking advertisements
at some point during open source development.

You can remain in any version of Paid [or Light] mode in perpetuity.

Methods of preventing older versions from reverting
to Light mode (due to failing to receive or display ads)
would then be needed after March 31 by anyone desiring
to remain in Sponsored mode using *older* versions
(not needed for the *final* versions).

A Paid mode registration will of course
also permanently ameliorate this situation.

Where and how may I obtain such a "method  of preventing older versions from
reverting to Light mode" ?

I just love v.  6.2.3. and would like to keep it working as it is now in the
sponsored mode.

As it says; get 6.2.4 (if you're using a Mac) or 7.1 (Windows). Either
should continue to work if you set them up in sponsored mode now.

I'm using 6.1 in Light mode, so nothing should change here.

Buying 7.1.0.9. now (for half price)  will enable you to use all
previous versions in paid mode, at least starting with the 5 version.

I don't know about version 4.  That one was handled a bit  differently.

In http://eudorabb.qualcomm.com/showthread.php?t=7578
it is asserted that you can do so,
by someone who believes they know how,
"without down-grading to Light Mode"

Posts to the Windows group made on Oct 1 2000 and Jun 4 2000
(archived on Google Groups) provide some details,
and of course there may be further info elsewhere
(which might be posted again here by kind helpful souls).

When ads cease being delivered (which still currently
presumably provides some revenue to Qualcomm until March 31),
then since Qualcomm invites everyone to subsequently use the
very *latest* version in perpetuity in a free "sponsored" mode
which will actually have no more ads, then it should be
just as reasonable to do the same with any *older* version.

The detection and nagging/reverting for ad non-delivery
(as well as for non-registration) has evidently already
been de-activated in the October 2006 "final versions,"
in anticipation of the end of operation of the ad servers.

However, there is no practical way go back in a time machine
to remove it from prior versions, and that's why Qualcomm
suggests that everyone using Sponsored mode enjoy a free upgrade,
so as not to have any trouble enjoying Eudora free forever,
in a "Sponsored" mode *without* ads.

Thus, one should feel completely free to use *older* versions
in just the same way as the *final* versions are offered,
if you come upon the method for doing so,
or of course to purchase during the final "fire sale"
if you want to add the "Paid" mode features:

SpamWatch (v6-v7), Ultra-fast search (v7 only),
and BossWatch (v7 only), per http://www.eudora.com/email/modes/

As to Light mode, I can't see why anyone would leave Eudora
in Light mode, once there are no more ads -- hence no more
"Ad Toolbar" and no more Ad Window! (you can simply
un-dock the latter and move it completely off-screen),
giving you a whole lot more in features
without the slightest difference in appearance
between Sponsored and Light modes.

Are you refering to this?

<quote>
Of course, for obvious reasons, it is crucial to have the ads visible.
There is also an easy way to get rid of the ads altogether, without
down-grading to Light Mode.

The "easy way"  was paying for the program  ;-)
