Worth upgrading?

For historical reasons I'm still using Eudora 6.1 in Light mode, on a
iG5/OS10.3.9 and a 667 TiBook/OS 10.2.8. I'm very happy with it- and
with them.

Would there be any compelling reason to upgrade to Eudora 6.2? Is it
nicer than 6.1 in any significant way?

I don't know the differences enough to be able to comment - sorry.
However you may know that it's the end of the line for Eudora as we know
it. But at this URL:

http://tinyurl.com/yexgre

they are accepting bug-reports which list the features of Eudora we
would like in Penelope. Eudora supporters might like to go there and add
the 4p-worth.

Yup, I knew that from reading here.

Thanks, though. I'm quite happy with Eudora as it is now; my main
concern is that they don't bugger up the good bits in moving to
Thunderbird, or whatever it is they're going to do.

I'm afraid we won't recognise it anymore.  ;-)

As to the differences between 6.1.1 and 6.2.4 they are minor unless
you've been plagued by problems addressed in the upgrade. In any case
it's no big deal to try it out if you like:  both versions create
separate preferences files in Library -> Preferences, but they can share
the same Eudora Folder containing your mail and settings.

I've done that and went back to 6.1.1 due to a few preference settings
that weren't available in 6.2.4 anymore. That might be specific to my
setup however. I boot into both, OS 9 and OS X, and need to have Eudora
functional under both systems.

That's why I went to 6.1.1 and stayed there, but I now no longer need to
boot the TiBook into 9 so I could use either 6.1 or 6.2. But for the use
I make of it (as I said, Light mode and POP3) I have no problems at all,
so I'll stick to 6.1.1.

Of course, I can stick to it as long as I want until somebody changes
the Internet on me...

The Internet of course is constantly changing. Eudora needs to be able
to deal with new mail servers, clients, etc. Not to mention the OS. So
there is the possibility that tomorrow something changes about your
situation which your version of Eudora cannot handle, but the latest can.

This may seem obvious, but I thought it would be worth pointing out the
obvious because it's not clear for how long Eudora will still be
available.

I haven't noticed any great difference, but in case you might someday
want to upgrade, I'd suggest downloading the program just to have on
hand in case it becomes unavailable in future.  You wouldn't have to
install it, just make sure you've got it.

Good idea. A nice application of the precautionary principle.

From the "What's New in Eudora 6.2" selection from my Eudora 6.2.4 Help
menu:

Emoticons

Emoticons are characters used to indicate emotion or expression. In
Internet communication, emoticons such as smiley faces can add an extra
level of context to email messages. See the
<http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/manuals.html>New Features Guide for
more information about using emoticons.

ScamWatch

Many email scams use misleading URLs to trick users into clicking their
links. What appears to be a legitimate web site address often hides a
malicious URL link.

Eudora now features URL protection, which makes it easy to determine if
a URL is legitimate before you click on it. You will be warned if the
URL is potentially deceptive. See the
<http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/manuals.html>New Features Guide for
more information about ScamWatch

Enhanced IMAP support

Eudora 6.2 speeds up deletion of IMAP message and ads better support
for working offline. When an IMAP message is deleted, it is immediately
hidden from view. At a later time, all messages marked for deletion are
removed from the server at one time. This allows IMAP messages to be
deleted when you do not have an active connection to the mail server.
See the <http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/manuals.html>New Features
Guide for more information about IMAP improvements

Launch iChat directly from the Eudora Address Book

You can now innitiate an iChat with someone in your Eudora Address
Book. Highlight an entry in your Address Book. If that user has a
username listed in the iChat field under the Home tab, the iChat button
will be enabled next to the To:, Cc: and Bcc: buttons. Clicking that
button will launch iChat and open a new chat window with that user.
Again, see the <http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/manuals.html>New
Features Guide for more information about ichat from within Eudora.

Live Search

Open Search windows are now updated when new mail arrives. Thus you can
think of search windows as 'Virtual Mailboxes'. For example, leave a
search window open for "Status is unread" and the results of that
search will continually update to show you all your unread mail.

Dock Icon shows the number of unread messages in Eudora

The icon in the Dock will now show the number of unread messages in
open mailboxes. This is helpful if you have Eudora hidden and mail
arrives into an open mailbox, or a filter moves mail to a mailbox and
opens that mailbox. The lower-right corner of the icon will change to
show the number of unread messages in these open mailboxes.

GREEN - means the number has increased since you last did anything in
Eudora.

BLUE - means it has not.

You can use <x-eudora-setting:396> to adjust this feature.

Improved SSL compatibility

Eudora 6.2 provides greater compatibility and improved handling of SSL
connections.

Thanks for that. The only new feature I might be remotely interested in
is better IMAP mailbox handling, but I wouldn't need that unless I
switched ISPs. And I see no reason to do that at present.

Light mode lacks the spam filter, right?

I'm probably a special case (tens of thousands of spams per day for me
bounce off my mail server, and about a dozen every week make it in...)
but I find the spam filter very useful, and surprisingly accurate given
my odd collection of 'legit' mail.

The bug fix stuff between 6.1.1 and 6.2.4 is pretty much edge cases and
IMAP. IMAP support remains severely flawed, so it really is not worrth
paying for on a hypothetical basis.

Now where did I hide that website...

If you mean a learning, adapting spam filter, it doesn't have that.

But Light mode has the full filtering options and my manually created
filters handle spam perfectly well.
