Help? strange problem with Eudora 6.2??

All of a sudden, the far left column of my INBOX has disappeared.....
that's the place where the little black circle tells you that the mail has
not yet been opened/read... and the little arrow tells you  that you have
responded to a particular mail.
Neither the dot  nor the arrow appear at all.... i've tried to bring them
back through trying all kinds of PREFERENCES , but with no luck.

...any help appreciated !@!

The main preference that is important is:

Mailbox Display -> Columns.  "Status" should be checked.
