What are "Word Services"?

When drafting a message or reply in Eudora, I'd like to have some added
text editing capabilities, with global Find and Replace high on the list.

Can "Word Services" do this?  I have Eudora 6.2.3 at present, and
BBEdit, TextEdit, and possibly Nisus Writer Express as the text editing
tools on my OS 10.3.9 system (MS Word is not an option).

But none of these come up highlighted when I open the "Add Word
Services" menu . . . ?

Thanks.

Word Services is/was a multi-platform protocol for inter-program
communication specifically focused on text manipulation, and it is as
lively as MacOS 9 and BeOS.
