.Mac Account Failure

dc1999@gmail.com - 29 Sep 2006 19:35 GMT I'm trying to set up a .Mac account in Eudora paid on my iMac Intel, and also on my Treo 650 with Chattermail.
The settings recommended by Apple's support page don't work. My account is <dave28c@mac.com>, and I've always understood that is user name, the incoming server is mail.mac.com, and the outgoing is smtp.mac.com.
I cannot either send through this Eudora or receive E-mail.
Eudora works fine for my earthlink account (it's the Dominant) and my domain mail, dclark@clarklawfirm.com, but not the .Mac account.
Apple refuses to offer telephone support and their website doesn't help, either.

In the Getting Started portion of my Eudora settings, I have the user name only (without the "@mac.com") in the User Name field for checking mail, and mail.mac.com is the Mail Server. And for sending mail, I have the SMTP server set to smtp.mac.com. In the email address field, I have the complete username@mac.com address entered. (It's not the address I use on Usenet, but you can figure out the primary from my signature.)
In the Checking Mail and Sending Mail sections, much of that carries forward. But I also set mine up to use the submission port (which Eudora already knows is 587) and allow authorization. This works around the fact that some ISPs squawk about using port 25 to send mail for accounts other than theirs. I took the additional step of setting mine up to use SSL, so that I don't send my details in clear text when sending or checking.
HTH.

dc1999@gmail.com - 30 Sep 2006 22:29 GMT The problem is the Getting Started part of Eudora must be set for the Dominant servers, namely, my ISP Earthlink... otherwise none of the accounts will work.

I don't understand why that would be, but even if it is, why is that a problem? Just create a new personality for the .mac account. If you don't want to check the email on the Dominant account, you can set it not to do so under the Personalities pane.

dc1999@gmail.com - 01 Oct 2006 15:32 GMT I've done that. Created new personality and everything. On this iMac Intel, I just tried and cannot receive or send in my Mac account. Eudora reported an error sending mail, and the message did not arrive on my Treo either.
Does Mac require submission port 587, or authorization. Should both, one, or neither of these be checked?
Went to the Verizon booth at the local Circuit City last night, and they can't figure it out either for my Verizon Treo. Still cannot send on it, but apparently can receive.
On my Verizon Treo, I can only receive

I've got the outgoing server as "smtp.mac.com" and hope that's right.

Which account has that option checked? Do you have a relay personality defined? (If not, you would need to set it in the "Sending Mail" pane.) When you have a personality set to use the relay personality, the mail is actually sent through the relay account, and not the named personality.

In a worst case scenario, there are only 4 combinations to try by brute force.
Authorization: NO Submission Port: NO
Authorization: YES Submission Port: NO
Authorization: NO Submission Port: YES
Authorization: YES Submission Port: YES
If you also test with/without the SSL option, that would double the possibilities, for a total of 8 combinations to try.

Since he is able to send and receive through his .Mac account, try duplicating his settings.
One other possibility is that .Mac requires a check before send. That's easy to test; set Eudora to send mail on checks, then check mail twice in succession.

Note that if you're on Earthlink's network, you will not be able to send to port 25 on any machine other than Earthlink's SMTP server. So just send our your mail using Earthlink's server, and you should be fine.

dc1999@gmail.com - 04 Oct 2006 15:15 GMT The Mac account is working now on the Treo and seems to be OK on this iMac, too. The issue was Mac required only my "dave28c" as username, not the entire E-mail address.
Could someone send me a message at <dave28c at mac.com>?
Thanks for all the help.
