Are you still a customer of Earthlink? If not, then they probably won't
allow you to relay outgoing mail through their servers.

Maybe, but you may be able to just fix your SMTP settings. Are you
connected to Copper.net or Earthlink when you attempt to send mail?
Most servers today will not allow you to send mail unless you're
authenticated, and often the authentication includes checking your IP to
make sure it is in the pool assigned by the ISP.
Have you ever been able to send email through Earthlink using Eudora?
Have you ever been able to send email through Copper.net using any email
program? Are you using the most current version of Eudora that will run
on your System 8.6? Looking at the Eudora webpages, it looks like maybe
the most recent version for 8.6 is Eudora 4.3.3, available at
<http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2350hq.html#4>.
I'm not sure if that version was able to authenticate through Earthlink
or not. You might check Google's archives for messages here re problems
sending through Earthlink. There was a thread titled
"Earthlink-TimeWarner-SMTP Woes :=(" a little over three years ago which
may have some helpful information. The first message in the thread had
MID <120620031318122619%neone@yahoo.com>.
Before that there was a comment by Andy Perry under "eudora, earthlink
and dsl" (MID
<AndPICKLESrew_PerLETTUCEry-D3EB1A.17341123042003@nnrp05.earthlink.net>)
where he said:

Earthlink has a history of changing their servers frequently, so that
old advice might or might not work.

My 7200 connects to copper.net, my PB3400c connects to Earthlink; I
still have an active account there (until I get copper.net to accept my
mail)

Have been sending e-mail through Earthlink for years using Eudora.
Can send e-mail through Copper.net ONLY to Copper.net addresses. (to
myself and to a Copper.net tech).
I'm using Eudora Light 3.1, which has always worked flawlessly with
Earthlink, Mindspring and Access4less.

I have a checked box "save password" and a "authentication - password"

My guess is that you may have to upgrade to a newer version to use
Eudora with Copper.net. The good news is that if it doesn't work and
you wish to revert to 3.1, you can; they use the same files and mailbox
formats. (Just remember to put a copy of the application somewhere so
you will still have it; otherwise the new installation will replace your
old Eudora. Of course, I'm sure 3.1 Light is still available for
download somewhere.)
As for Earthlink, they may have deliberately changed something yet again
or had a temporary glitch. There's also the possibility of a slightly
corrupted Settings file causing the problems, but it seems highly
unlikely that both Macs would suddenly develop corrupted Settings at the
same time.

I can't remember what options 3.1 had for authentication. You can
install the Esoteric Settings plugin to see if that makes more options
available to you.

Good guess; I upgraded to Eudors 4.3.3 and the problem disappeared.
Many thanks.

I'll upgrade the Eudora for Earthlink, but again you are probably right,
they changed something AGAIN that screwed me up. I've gotten dumped
onto Earthlink twice, from Mindspring and Access4less. Their MO is
consistent, they buy a good ISP for the customers then drive them away
with bad service. If Copper.net sells out to Earthlink I'll look for
another provider on day #1 instead of waiting while the service slowly
degrades.

I think I'm lucky; Earthlink doesn't want to serve my area. :-)
