Errors When Retrieving Mail

About a week ago I started getting errors with TWO of my FOUR POP
accounts when getting mail with v6.2.3... sometimes a third account will
get an error but works OK when running again. No recent changes to my
System (Mac OS 10.4.7) so I have nothing to undo. The most persistent
error is:

TCP/IP Error. - 3158; An Open Transport error has occurred  {37:583}

also... 20% of the time one or the other will get:

TCP/IP Error. - 706; Lost connection to the server  {37:540}

the occasional error on third account is:

Temporary error receiving mail; couldn't create 000001 (-48). Mail may
be delayed but should... (rest of error message covered by "Help" button)

which hasn't worked because web site that has error messages has been
down for some time.

Same ports and servers work with Mail.app... and not other errors
relating to TCP/IP have surfaced. My ISP claims no problems on their
mail server.

I've also updated to 6.2.4b4 to see if that would resolve errors... it
did not.

I see nothing in Setting that might have something to do with this.
Anyone have any knowledge/ideas on what might be going on? TIA... Jim

I would try increasing the time-out settings in Eudora.  If you have the
Esoteric Settings activated, look for the Settings panel called
"Timeouts" and increase the numbers there.  If you haven't yet activated
the Esoteric Settings, you can do it from the Finder. "Get Info" on the
Eudora application and check for the plug-ins section of the Get Info
pane.

Thanks for suggestion... I set "Connection open:" and "Response from
server:" to max. Errors still exist... every time I retrieve mail... Jim

Well, a rather drastic thing to try would be to rebuild the Eudora
Settings.  You can rebuild the Settings by holding down all the modifier
keys (command-option-shift-control) while you select Settings from the
Special menu.  This will retain your server info, but most of your other
customizations will be lost.  Before rebuilding the Settings, put a copy
somewhere outside the Eudora Folder so you can easily get it back if it
turns out the problem is not solved by rebuilding the Settings.

You can make it a little easier to restore your customizations if you
have Eudora create a list of them for you before you rebuild the
Settings.  Do this by opening a new message composition window and then
choose "Insert system configuration" from the Help menu.

Rebuilding Setting did not resolve problem. All symptoms still point to
my Service Providers mail server... no matter what they claim. I will be
hammering on them again tomorrow morning.

Thanks for your help... Jim
