Problem w/styles in my signature

R. Millstein - 25 May 2006 04:46 GMT Hi,
I'm using Eudora 6.0.2, and have been for many years. I've suddenly developed a problem, and I can't figure out why -- I can't think of anything that I have changed.
I have Eudora set to prompt me with a dialog box when a message has styles in it, to ask me if I want to send it with styles, as plain text, or both.
For some reason, all of my signatures now register as styles, causing the dialog box to come up. The signatures used to just go out as plain text, and no dialog came up. Help! It's annoying to have to click on this for every outgoing message.
Thanks for any help.

Have you verified whether your sigs actually do have styled text? (Easy way to make sure they don't is to open each sig, Cmd-a, Cmd-x and then Cmd-Shift-v[*] and Cmd-s.)
[*] That's assuming you haven't changed the default :) To make sure, hold the Shift key while going tothe edit menu Edit, which should then list "Paste Without Styles". If not, repeat *without* holding Shift.

If not, repeat *without* holding Shift. Yep, first thing I checked. Sorry, I should have said that. Other suggestions?

Suddenly, *all* of my sigs generate the dialog box, even after making sure that there are no styles. Eudora *thinks* they have styles in them, but they do not.

As a workaround, you could just disable the "Ask each time" option, so Eudora will always change styled to plain text before sending. (But it would be ignoring the original problem, which possibly affects other things as wll.)

I'm starting to think it's something more serious, so I'm going to try reinstalling the app.

> I'm starting to think it's something more > serious, so I'm going to try reinstalling the app. Don't. That's almost certainly a waste of time.
Instead, quit Eudora, remove the files ~/Documents/Eudora Folder/Eudora Settings and ~/Documents/Eudora Folder/Eudora Settings.bkup. Launch Eudora (you'll have to enter your settings anew) and see if the problem persists.
If you have a known to be good older copy of your settings file, use that so that you don't need to enter your settings anew.
To make it easy to create all your settings anew like you had them, before removing the settings file, create a new textc file (File menu) and under the Help menu select Insert System Configuration. Save to disk.
Understand that where I say "remove", I don't say "delete". Keep a copy (unless you already have a good backup routine in place, which you should).
Instead of going through this with your Eudora Settings file, maybe you should do this with the files in ~/Documents/Eudora Folder/Signature Folder.

And yet, oddly enough, it worked! (I had alredy done this before I read your message). The problem is gone.

Redoing the settings is quite a bigger project, so I avoid doing it if I can. (Although thanks to you and Kathy for ways to ease that process, should it become necessary).
I guess my thinking is, try what's easiest first. And for me, reinstalling the app is much easier!
Thanks again for your advice.

Kathy Morgan - 28 May 2006 04:07 GMT > [...] > [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > Weird. I can't think of what might be causing this. The only thing that occurrs to me is possibly a corrupted Settings file. You can rebuild the Settings by holding down all the modifier keys (command-option-shift-control) while you select Settings from the Special menu. This will retain your server info, but most of your other customizations will be lost. Before rebuilding the Settings, put a copy somewhere outside the Eudora Folder so you can easily get it back if it turns out the problem is not solved by rebuilding the Settings.
You can make it a little easier to restore your customizations if you have Eudora create a list of them for you before you rebuild the Settings. Do this by opening a new message composition window and then choose "Insert system configuration" from the Help menu.
