Here's a problem I came across the other day:
Usually people, both PC and Mac users, receive my attachments just fine,
but in this case they couldn't open any of the versions I sent, neither
Word- nor RTF- nor PDF format.
Attempting to open the Word file they first got a progress window that
said "Converting Word-for-Mac format" and then another message that said
"This file must be converted with BinHex 4.0" - end of story.
Trying to open the PDF Acrobat complained that the file was damaged and
could not be opened.
Later I posted the same files on the web and they were able to open them
without a hitch.
I also forwarded the files to other PC-based colleagues and they were
able to open all of them without problems.
Digging deeper into the issue it turned out that my Eudora was set to
"encode attachments using BinHex" and to "always include Macintosh
information".
I unchecked that setting and changed the encoding method to AppleDouble
("MIME"). I have yet to prove that this works any better, but these are
actually Eudora's default values, so perhaps it's best to stick with
them for compatibility.
Can anyone confirm that?

Yes, that's generally considered the most compatible configuration.

Mac user: "Macs only have 40 viruses, tops!"
PC user: "SEE! Not even the virus writers support Macs!"

Thanks Sander for the confirmation!
I must have changed those settings at some point in the past - so much
for successful self-sabotage. ;-)
