I run Eudora for Mac (6.2.3/ad supported) on two Macs (1GHz iBook &
2x2.0GHz G5), both running 10.4.5, both accessing my ISP's POP mail. On
the laptop, I tell Eudora to leave the email on the server, so that the
G5 is the complete repository of my incoming email. But I do compose
and send email from the laptop as well, and would like to combine the
contents of the two Out mailboxes onto the G5. I have tried (with the
program not running) duping the iBook's Out mailbox, renaming it and
moving it to the G5's Mail Folder. Also, I option-dragged to copy all
the messages in the Out box to a new mailbox, and copied that to the
G5. In both cases, after opening the program then trying to open the
mailbox, I get an error:
mailboxname (-5000); An unknown error has occured. (45:215)
It looks like I'm doing all the right things, and I've been using
Eudora over a decade, so I do know the program. My research only points
me to procedures for moving entire folders of email, not just single
mailboxes. Have I missed something? Thanks!

What you are doing looks ok to me. Certainly, I have merged mail from
two machines by just moving a mailbox file into the Mail Folder of the
target machine. Start Eudora and there it is. Then I just dragged the
messages from that mailbox into the one where I wanted them.
A few thoughts:
Are there any unusual characters in the mailbox name?
You don't happen to have different toc settings on the two machines (See
Miscellaneous settings panel)
Have you tried opening the mailbox in a text editor to see if anything
looks strange. Check in particular what the line endings are -
traditional Mac, or Unix. TextWrangler will tell you this.
Good luck

To move a single mailbox- call it 'Transfer' for the sake of argument;
create a mailbox also called 'Transfer' on the destination machine.
Then go into the 'Mail' folder of the originating machine, and copy
'Transfer' and if you're using .toc files 'Transfer.toc', to the Mail
folder of the destination machine, replacing the existing 'Transfer' and
'Transfer.toc' files.
The mails will then be sitting in the Transfer mailbox on the
destination machine= from where you can move them in the usual way.

In my case I share a mailbox between two Macs.
The mailbox on Mac 1 is in a folder which is shared (via internet),
and when Mac 2 accesses that mailbox, the remote volume is
mounted from Mac 1 via afp.

It was actually a combination of .toc issues and account permissions
(the account names are a slightly different on the two machines). At
any rate, the problem is solved. Thanks for the suggestions/ideas!
