The beach ball syndrome

I've been using Eudora for many years, mostly without any trouble.
However, lately Eudora has been freezing and giving me the beach ball at
random, to the point where I have to force quit it.
It's hard to tell, but I have a feeling that this behavior started after
I upgraded to OS 10.4.5.
I have replaced the settings, trashed the preferences and reinstalled
Eudora but that made no difference.
Anybody else has a similar experience?

I've been seeing a similar problem. I thought it was because I switched
to a MacBook, but it could just as easily be 10.4.5.

Similar to what?

I realise that you are using the appalling and famously broken Google
Groups interface (for which the creators will undoubtedly roast in hell
for all time), so maybe you are not aware that it is possible to quote
enough in your message to indicate the context in which you are posting.
Instead of hitting 'Reply', please use 'Options' which then allows you
to quote properly as one should in News postings. Quote just enough of
the previous message to make it clear what you are replying to.

The reason is that while proper newsreaders allow you to go back up the
thread to find the original posting, when you receive hundreds of posts
a day, as many people do, it is far more convenient and pleasant if you
can get the whole sense from one post.

Similar to this post where Eudora is freezing at random times. It is
often click on a different Eudora window or trying to open a message.
I'm using Eudora 6.2 on a OS X 10.4.5 on a MacBookPro. I migrated for
an old PBG4 which didn't seem to have this freezing happening -- it was
slow, but in a different way than my current setup.

try using the applications "Console" and "Activity Monitor" (should be
located in the Utilities directory) and look which applications locks up
or if you see any notification in the console. That might give you a
clue.

Well, I hate to say this, but it's way too technical for me. I can find
the crash log for Eudora, but it might as well be ancient Martian
hieroglyphs.

I'll look at the activity monitor next time there is a crash, though I'm
not sure what I should be looking for, let alone how to interpret it.

How much RAM do you have on your Mac?  I had to increase the RAM on my
TiBook when I upgraded to 10.4 because everything slowed to a kludgy
crawl, with long beach ball episodes.

I have plenty (768 MB) so that shouldn't be the problem.
One thing I've noticed though, is that I no longer can find any
preference file (.plist) for Eudora.
