OK, I've scoured the old posts, and even searched thru Google for any
info, and all I find are a few similar cases on Windoze machines.

First, I'm on a 733 MHz QuickSilver G4 running 10.3.9 w/640 MB RAM, and
using Eudora (ad version) 6.2.3. This version this machine for several
months, and nothing's been changed recently.

I was checking my mail (3rd or 4th time/day), and Eudora was happily
downloading about 25 'normal' sized e-mails. All of a sudden, the app
crashed. When I re-started, it did NOT ask to rebuild the toc (which has
happened in the past) Instead, Eudora merrily opens an EMPTY in box! ALL
of my in box e-mails are GONE!

After reading the Eudora Forums and searching thru newsgroups, I've
reached a few conclusions. First, I should NOT have had 5+ years, and
~10,000+ e-mails in the in box. Second... I should ALWAYS back up
important data. Third, I need more RAM. Finally, maybe I should consider
Apple's "Mail" program-??

So OK, (before you scold me!) I know (some of) what I did wrong, but is
there ANY hope of recovering YEARS of mail that was stored in my in box?
I looked at the mbx file, and it was empty. My out box, and other mail
boxes, as well as stationery and address book entries, are seemingly
intact... just the 'main' in box disappeared.

Any suggestions at recovering the old (quite full) mail box would be
MUCH appreciated. And I promise to trim it down and manage my in box
better. :-) (As well as get more RAM & do more frequent back-ups!)

Thanks for any help/suggestions,
Tony

Before you do anything else, look in your Eudora Folder/Spool Folder.
Eudora puts a copy of the In and out mailboxes there "In.temp" and
"Out.temp". It is possible that they contain some of your messages if
they haven't been overwritten.

Second: I suppose by "looked at the mbx file" you mean that you made a
copy of the file Eudora Folder/Mail Folder/In, and then opened that file
with a text editor (TextWrangler, BBedit, vi, etc). If that is what is
"empty" I think you are SOL.

Thanks (to you and Sander) for the suggestions of checking w/a text
editor, which I did NOT try. I haven't used Eudora since the 'mishap',
so maybe I can salvage something.

Fortunately, my OUT box is intact, and I almost always 'copy' any
relevant/important info from the original mail, so I do have that.

Sander - As for switching away from Eudora, you're right... I suppose I
can 'forgive' the app for doing this to me. After all, I was expecting a
lot (maybe even being abusive <g>), and should have had backups. (Hmm...
isn't that what _everyone_ says, AFTER the fact?!) To all reading this -
back up your mailboxes!

Seriously, a bit OT, but I'm pretty good around a Mac; presided over a
MUG for years, did a bunch of IT work, and friends typically call me
when they have a computer problem. I'm reasonably careful and respectful
of my computer. Still, this happened to me (& trust me, it's a MESS to
lose all that e-mail!) So, yes... while it's quite rare, this could
certainly happen to you. Have back-ups!

Looks like when I re-opened Eudora after the 'mishap', the temp file was
overwritten. I think if I had looked at this file _before_ re-starting
the app, I might have been able to 'rescue' the original 'in box'.

Same overwritten issue here. I suppose i could go in with some sort of
recovery tool, and pull up the 'old' version, before the new header
(with zero records) wrote over the old one. But I suspect that's going
to be more trouble than it's worth.

If anyone has any ideas, let me know - otherwise, I've resolved to
simply start over. <sigh>

Thanks,
Tony

Not entirely impossible that, assuming you did (close to) nothing wiath
that 'puter since, the data is still there on disk somehow. If so, you
could try with some 'low level' disk editor. Possibly Data Rescue would
be of use here.

But the more you've since done on that machine, the bigger the chance
that the data has been overwritten now.

I purposely didn't do much, and didn't do _anything_ w/Eudora. However,
I've decided the effort to retrieve the mail just isn't worth it. After
the initial panic wore off (took a couple of days!) I think I can live
w/o the contents of the in-box. Thankfully, the OUT-box is intact, and I
generally copy the original mail when replying, so I have that info.

So, I'll simply start anew - now that I have back ups of the other mail
boxes, of course! :-)

Thanks for the help!

I tend to be careless about backups, but everytime I read a post like
this, I at least back up my ~documents/Eudora Folder.  Thanks for the
reminder--I know I'm overdue.  The other backups can keep, but I would
really hate to lose my emails.

Agreed so far.

I don't see how this Eudora problem should lead to that conclusion.
Eudora is extremely stable. The fact that you've now had 1 problem
(which, if you can't salvage the mail, is really mostly a problem of not
backing up) doesn't mean you'll have even less problems with Mail.app.

*How* did you look? I'd suggest BBEdit (or its freeware version,
TextWrangler).

Do you keep your mail folder in your Eudora Application Folder or
elsewhere? anyway do a search on your disk of files whose "name is" In
or Out and see if you have two of them. It happens that Eudora looses
contact with the original Mail Folder and its content and crated another.
In this case you might still have all your old stuff. In this case yoou
may click on the setting file of the old folder to see your old stuff.
Hopefully
