Juno.com problems and problems changing port numbers in Eudora/Outlook CE

JW you were right and I did cancel Juno today.  They may be good for many,
but not me.  It was tough canceling and it took one hour of arguing with the
reps who finally cancelled my account after I yelled a little and thretened
to dispute their charge. I hate being mean, but I dont like people who refuse
to honor my requests.

The problem I am having FEW IF ANY WILL UNDERSTAND is that my Internet is
barebones provided via wifi only and without any email or newsgroups.  I did
sign up for newsfeeds.com however for newsgroups access.

For pop3/SMTP email I am at a loss.  Runbox.com looks preety nice, but the
only problem is that my ISP for some reason blocks port 25 so I cannot send
email.  Eudora 4.2 for Mac and for Windows do not seem to "EASILY" support
changing the port numbers.  If worse comes to worse I can use Outlook Express
for Windows which allows port number changes, but I'd rather stay with Eudora
at all costs.

On top of this Pocket Outlook CE does not support  changing the port numbers.
I did try smtp.runbox.com:26 and it did not work.

Perhaps someone knows where to go in the Windows registry to find the port
numbers.

I hate being limited to webmail and aol.

John

I can't say anything useful about the Windows version, but Eudora's
"Esoteric Settings" plug-in (part of the standard Mac distribution, but
turned off by default I believe) provides a "Ports & Protocols" pane in
the settings dialog that lets you pick any port you like. It has been
available for as long as there has been a paid version of Eudora and
maybe longer...

Port 26 would be a rather unusual and non-standard place to put an
alternate port talking SMTP. There is a defined standard for a limited
subset of SMTP suitable for initial mail submission (sometimes referred
to as the "SUBMIT" protocol) running on port 587. The idiots in Redmond
misused port 465 for a while for SMTP with SSL wrapping it, but no one
competent followed their lead.

If a mail client can't use port 587, it is either ancient or written by
incompetents and should be dropped completely.

Maybe so, but I surely couldn't help there. If you're only using MS
crapware, why did you post your article to the Mac Eudora group???

FWIW, I don't think Windows Eudora uses the registry for its settings.
Qualcomm has usually been smarter than that.

Because I use both Windows and Macintosh.

Why not try Hotmail or Yahoo, BJ?

Either is free, and you don't need to install any s/w on your
computer, so there are not conflicts in that regard. You also end up
being able to store some 10 MB of mail on their servers.

It's a "win-win.'

At LEAST give it a try.  I have been with Yahoo for some 5 years now,
and the only problem I've had besides some jerk in here canceling 3 of
my mail boxes is the excessive SPAM. But I have a dozen filters set,
which has cut down on the SPAM a lot.

>For pop3/SMTP email I am at a loss.

From my limited understanding of the issues, both Yahoo and Hotmail do
both.

Runbox.com looks preety nice, but the

In my opinion, you are making a MAJOR mistake trying to run an e-mail
client from your computer. Suppose your computer dies, gets lost or
gets stolen?  All 3 have happened to me. With an on-your computer
client, your e-mail is "bye bye".

Frankly, BJ, you don't seem to be one who approaches computing or
webbing with any common sense.

If worse comes to worse I can use Outlook Express
>for Windows which allows port number changes, but I'd rather stay with Eudora

If you want to "stay with Eudora at all costs", then stop bitching.

You are describing the price tag. Nothing but problems.

>On top of this Pocket Outlook CE does not support  changing the port numbers.

What did I tell you?  I told you your 2 problems were:
1. Juno
2. running a client on your computer.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

And why on EARTH are you messing with AOL?

Talk about filtered access!!!

Do you understand that -- with AOL -- you may as well have Bill Gates
looking over your shoulder.

Both Microsoft MSN access (ISP) and AOL provide you with something
like 1/10000000 th of the access that's out there?

With AOL, you most certainly will not have access to Usenet.

As I said before,

go with

Earthlink or AT & T

and

Yahoo or Hotmail.

ALL your problems are thereby solved.

God bless!

Then you do indeed have newsgroups. So yes, few will understand how you can
be posting to a newsgroup and not have access to it.

A simple web search would have told you why port 25 is being blocked.

It is not "for some reason" and is very common.
