How do I get Eudora to stop?

I'm using Eudora 6.2.3 (ad version) and starting about 2-3 weeks ago
whenever I would retrieve mail, Eudora would become "busy" for several
minutes... sometimes as long as 20 minutes before "In" box updates
displaying new mail. I don't have any idea what Eudora is doing... other
than a guess that Eudora is "analyzing" the contents of the database
somehow because the disk activity indicators I have installed show a
constant disk read with an occasional write.

In the past couple of days sometimes the new mail would display in the
"In" box immediately, other times it would take a few minutes (as
described above) and then a couple of days ago the "analyzing" had not
completed 45 minutes after I retrieved mail. Eventually I "Force-Quit"
Eudora. When I relaunched, the only thing I noticed was that one email
in the "In" Box was displaying a "question mark" in the status column
and was appearing about a year off in the sort order ie: displayed at
9/20/2005 instead of its actual date of 9/16/2004.

A couple of evenings ago I retrieved email and after retrieval was
complete, Eudora started "analyzing" the new mail. I left the room 2
hours later and Eudora was still "analyzing". When I came back this
morning, Eudora was still "analyzing". Then when I had to leave, I put
the PB in sleep mode and when I awakened PB, Eudora continued
"analyzing". During morning I put PB into sleep mode a couple of more
times and each time I awakened it, Eudora continued "analyzing".

Late that afternoon I decided to "Force-Quit" Eudora again... I had
tried several times to "Quit" with cmd-Q... the File Menu would "color"
but Eudora kept "analyzing" and would not Quit. Interestingly... when I
re-launched Eudora it continued "analyzing" and all controls were
inactive except "Hide". The only way I could get Eudora to "Quit" was to
"Force-Quit". I did this several more times but as of this writing...
which is almost 72 hours later, Eudora is still "analyzing".

What the heck is going on? Supposing that I ever get this thing
stopped... what do I fix? Are there any tools/applications to repair the
Eudora's database... if that's even anything that I need to do?

1gig TiBook w/1gig RAM running Panther 10.3.9.

I hope some of you can help me figure out whatever is happening... Jim

My guess (and that's all it is) is that the Eudora Settings file is
corrupted.  Ordinarily I'd suggest you try rebuilding it, but from your
description I don't think you'll be able to.  Move the Settings file out
of the ~/Documents/Eudora Folder and restart Eudora.  You'll have to
reenter all of your information, including server, user name, password,
etc.  If this fixes the problem, great!  If it doesn't, you can move
your original Settings file back and be no worse off than you were
before.

I don't think you need to, but the various mailboxes, address book,
etc., are just text files, so if you do need to do any repairs, you can
use a text editor such as TextWrangler or BBEdit to tweak them.  (Work
on copies--mail is too important to start experimenting with the
original files. <g>)

Thanks Kathy for your response.

I let Eudora 6.2.3 run another day, then started to "Force-Quit" and hit
a wrong key... (control key instead of option) and got control back of
Eudora. I Quit app and relaunched. I again had no control of Eudora
until I pushed same key combo as before. I did this several more
times... learning that just pushing the ESC key gives me back control of
Eudora. I have no idea what effect the ESC key has on Eudora other than
possibly aborting some routine that was taking away user control.

After getting control of Eudora back... I restarted Mac OS 10.3.9,
repaired Permissions, re-installed the last Java update and installed
the last Security Update... which is what I wanted to do in the first
place. After restarting... all is well with Eudora... except for the one
email (referenced) above that is a year out of place in the sort order.
Maybe I'll attempt to repair it when I get a spare moment... Jim

These days, in most Mac apps Esc is the equivalent of good old "Cmd-."

You may be able to easily fix it from within Eudora.  Open the message,
click on the pencil icon, and correct the date. Save the change, and
close the message, and it may date sort back where it belongs.
