Kevinw@officeformac.com - 21 Feb 2008 17:20 GMT Anybody having problems with Search? I type in the name of the person who sent me an email in the "Q" search box upper right with something like "Michael" which is part of "Michael@abc.com". And nothing. If find nothing. I not only have several messages my in box but also in saved and deleted messages. Am I doing something wrong?

What version of Entourage do you havew?? 2008 comes with two options: a quickfilter that only filters based on selected criteria (and e-mail address is not one of them), or the serach box, that's actually spotlight-based and should be able to find what you are looking for,

If I type something like a persons name in Calendar, in which I know there are many entries, nothing shows up unless there is something for today. Same with Tasks. All other modules work fine. I don't have any idea why.

Kevinw@officeformac.com - 22 Feb 2008 19:27 GMT In reply to my question I found some answers. First I am running Office 2008. Second I went ahead and rebuilt the database "System preferences, spotlight, rebuild." this solved the problem.

Step Schwarz - 22 Feb 2008 04:11 GMT I think the "Q" the original poster mentions is the magnifying glass icon. And I also had this problem. Even though the preference was set to include Entourage items in Spotlight, neither Entourage nor Spotlight were able to produce any search results. (With the exception of the Filter, which worked fine.) I tried a number of things, and one of them must have worked because everything is working fine now. Here's what I did:
- I've had Spotlight ignoring <user>/Library/Caches (in System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy) ever since I installed Tiger. I removed that block. - In Entourage > Preferences... > Spotlight, I unchecked both checkboxes and closed the Preferences window. I quit and relaunched Entourage. I went back to Preferences... > Spotlight, checked both checkboxes, then clicked Rebuild button.
After a few minutes I tried to use Spotlight. Though the icon would highlight in my menu bar, I would never get the search window. What I would get is several errors about a network drive being disconnected (until I clicked the menu bar icon again to de-select it).
I gave it a few hours. Now everything works normally.
I should mention I'm on Tiger and my Entourage database is ~650 MB.
Hope this helps!

Spotlight will index any cache files the Entourage daemon has created even if the daemon is not launched, but no new cache files will be created until the daemon is launched again. If the Microsoft Sync daemon never launches, there's no way for Entourage to sync data with Sync Services. The preferences in Entourage for Sync Services basically control 1) if this daemon app is launched and 2) where it should sync data to-from.

closethipster@officeformac.com - 22 Feb 2008 04:49 GMT Let's see.. Office Reminders and Sync Services (the three checkboxes in the Preferences, at least) are all on. But this is interesting.. so there's some connection between Spotlight and Sync Services?

Steve Basile - 14 Apr 2008 20:16 GMT Thomas and Christian,
I asked earlier about how to Find Within and may have an answer both your questions and mine in the same shot. Ready?
Leave Spotlight searching ON but hold the option key down when you select Find or Advanced Find from the Edit menu. Voila!

Alex Schoenfeldt - 16 Apr 2008 03:05 GMT Wow, that worked for me too. I hope Diane Ross reads this, as all of her help was a waste of hours of my time.

Diane's got thick skin though I sense as anyone in her line of work of taking all the hard questions has to.

Leo - 22 May 2008 18:48 GMT Is there a way to standardize a search to occur in ALL MAIL instead of INBOX when you first enter the search phrase into the search box? Now I enter the search phrase, nothing shows up because it is looking into INBOX - then i have to click ALL MAIL and it finds it - i wish it automatically looked in all mail right away - is there a setting?

No, but you could create a Custom Search. Just save the search after you select All Mail. (delete the search term after the search window pops up) You can then double click on this search in the folder view and open it in it's own window so you'll have it easily available.
