Sound Set in Entourage 2008 Gone?

AlphaBovine@officeformac.com - 16 Jan 2008 21:55 GMT
Just installed Office 2008 on a 10.5.1 MacBook Pro and working great. Only complaint is other than the opening "chime" all the other notification sounds no longer play. I have restarted, confirmed that the Entourage Sound Set file is still under my Microsoft User Data Folder, but nothing plays anymore. While this isn't a major issue, I am in another part of the office and I rely on the audible notification for new messages so I don't have to go back and check every few min.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Similarly, I can't get any of the custom soundsets I have to work.

What version and what is this snippet in addition to?

There is a change to soundsets in Entourage 2008. Entourage has a whole new
sound set format that isn't backward compatible. They are mp3 files now. I
expect we'll see a way to update out soon.

This is a separate issue from no sounds. You could try quitting Entourage
and restarting to see if they return.

Here's what I noticed. Launch Entourage 2008. Choose File > Preferences > Notifications. Click on the speaker icons. The sounds play fine.

Now invoke an action that will yield some sounds. I chose Send/Receive on my five email accounts. Only one "No mail sound" is played (instead of five).

More importantly, none of the sounds work. Not as a result of the normal actions and not by clicking the speaker icons in the Preferences window.

Quit and relaunch Entourage. The first notification sound will work again. But from that point on, no sound.

Definitely a bug in Entourage 2008.

I also installed Office 2008 on my MacBook Pro 10.5.1 and cannot get the sounds to work. I'm also having a problem with clicking on "New Mail" and nothing happens.

Yes. I can receive all of my email accounts but the mail (new) does not respond and give me a new window to compose in.
AlphaBovine@officeformac.com - 17 Jan 2008 01:40 GMT
To get back to the sound issue, I tried your steps there PGB and when I did a cold relaunch of Entourage I still get the welcome "Chime" but that is about it. I go straight to preferences and click on the speaker icons and the sounds do not play.

Just for kicks, I went back in Time Machine and replaced the Entourage Sound Set with the one from 2004 before I had installed '08 to see if that would have any affect...nada.

At this point I don't know what the issue is. I get the first Chimes and then maybe one sound before it goes mute. I am not a programmer or debugger so I have no clue where to begin.

The toolbar changes depending on what view you are in. If you are in Tasks
for example, clicking on New gets you a new Task.

New Mail is designed to create a new mail message to send.

If I understand you correctly, you want to run the schedule "Send & Receive
All" to see if you have received any new mail. In Entourage 2004, you can do
that at least three different ways:
1.  Click the Send & Receive button on the Entourage toolbar.
2.  Press cmd-K.
3.  Select the schedule from Tools\Schedules on the menu.

Hope this helps.

When I open Entourage 2008 and go to Preferences/Notifications, the
Sound set says "Default" but clicking on any of the Sound icons, I get
nothing.

Unlike Entourage 2004, Entourage 2008 now uses the Mac OS X system's
Alert Volume setting instead of the Output Volume setting.

Be sure both are turned up in your Sounds preference pane.

Hope this helps!

I just installed Leopard and MS Office 2008 yesterday and have been
very happy with all the newness.  However, I have no sound with
Entourage either - same situation as described above.  Also, the sound
sets I had on Entourage 2004 did not transfer over (of course if the
sounds don't work at all that's a moot - no pun intended - point!).
Any fix for this that anyone nows of?

Andy,

They don't have Starbucks in CA? :-) Nah, you guys did a great job. The program works fine. Just a couple of glitches here and there but nothing that would cause me to roll back to '04. Keep up the good work and buy another latté on me.

Is Microsoft aware of the problem? Is help on the way?

I'm getting the same thing.

Maybe it's because I/we didn't delete 2004?

Also, the Microsoft Sound Set in my Entourage Sound Sets folder is still from '04. Shouldn't there be an '08 Sound Set?

Entourage 2008 does not support soundsets for Entourage 2004. However, a
different method does exist to allow users to create their own
soundsets. I've asked Microsoft if I can put up a tutorial on The
Entourage Help Blog based on some information provided me. I'll post
when something becomes available.

When i open entourage i get the welcome sound, I then go to check my email I get the no new messages sound then i get no more sounds until i quit the app and start again. (Macbook Pro OS X 10.5.1) (works fine if i put 2004 back on) (using the standard microsoft sound set)

- I have check this on my mac pro running 10.4.11 and this seems ok
- Created a new user SAME PROBLEM?
- completely deleted all traces of office 2004 and 2008, preferences, fonts etc. SAME PROBLEM?
AlphaBovine@officeformac.com - 17 Jan 2008 15:06 GMT
Ok, I think after reading all this it is just a bug that will be fixed by a later updated. It is what happens when you get a program right out of the gate.

William Smith, I don't understand your post however that 2008 doesn't support custom sound sets. I am not talking about custom sound sets, I am talking about when you navigate to Preferences > Notifications and the Default sound set looks just like it did in 2004. Also, I did delete 2004 as the set up assistant removed it to the trash after I finished installing 2008.

Now if 2008 doesn't support the old sound set standard, why would they have the same screen in the preferences that looks like the did? It just doesn't make sense.

Also the alert sounds are all the way up and since you hear the first chime and no mail "doink" then silence, it doesn't make sense that alert sounds would be down either.

I have another Desktop 1.42GHz G4 and I just reformatted it and put 10.4.11 on it and before I did anything else I did a clean install of 2008 and the sound problem was present on there as well so I know it isn't just my computer.

That leaves me to believe that it is indeed a bug a Sounds said earlier in the postings and that I will wait for an update. If it isn't fixed in the first update I will reopen the thread but until then I will chalk it up to an early program bug.

Thanks for your input everyone!
PGB - 17 Jan 2008 15:21 GMT
Please note that the problem we're pointing out here is *not* an output volume setting problem. The very first time an newly-launched instance of Entourage 2008 tries to play a notification sound based on an action, it will play just fine. (That might be the welcome chime. I have this chime turned off, so the first sound played on my computer might be a result of no-mail-fetched.) After the first sound is played, no sound. Before the first notification sound based on an action, the speaker icons in the Preferences window will play the notification sounds. After the first notification sound based on an action, the speaker icons in the Preferences window *will not* play the notification sounds.

I've ruled out the output volume setting problem. I've also used Audio Midi Setup to rule out a sampling rate problem.

(So turn off your welcome notification sound, then relaunch Entourage 2008. Choose Entourage > Preference > Notifications. You'll be able to play all of the sounds by clicking the speaker icons. Once an action triggers one of these sounds, no sounds will ever be played again. So...the sounds are there and you can hear them...until the first sound is triggered.)

I have been having this problem since the beta came out. Makes you
wonder why MS did not fix this before the final release. Surley they
or their testers saw this issue months ago.  I was so hoping that it
would be gone in the final, but there it was again last night after I
installed the program.

To be honest, this bug doesn't surprise me. I used to work with QA at a video game publishing company and this would not be what they call a "show stopper" or an "A" bug.
Since it doesn't affect the program working it is acceptable to ship and fix with a patch later. Not a perfect world, but that is what you get when you can go online and download updates. Even more reason not to buy a fresh release (being the hypocrite that I am as I type this on the new program. :-)

Removed ³sent mail² sound....nothing changes; no notifications yet.

It seems to me that the whole lower part of the notifications/sound
preferences panel is not clickable (this is another issue of course).
I cannot click loudspeaker icon to test sound; cannot change sound set; alco
cannot launch the web address of microsft mac dept. which is in the lowest
part of the panel.

Hi,

I¹ve also been working to repro this issue as well, I have found you need to
turn off the following Sound notifications and things seems to continue to
work on Leopard.
   Sent mail sound
   Mail error sound
   No mail sound

You need to quit Entourage and restart for the sounds to return.

In the quick testing I did, I noticed that each of these options prevents
further sounds from working in Entourage.

Hi,

Digging into this more, the results will vary based on what type of account
you are using.  For Exchange, turning off the settings partially work around
the problem.  If using POP, then things are still broken and I don¹t see a
work around at the moment.  One other avenue would be to have an applescript
play a sound when you get new mail by running it as part of a rule.

Please note that the problem we're pointing out here is *not* an output
volume setting problem. The very first time an newly-launched instance of
Entourage 2008 tries to play a notification sound based on an action, it

I've ruled out the output volume setting problem. I've also used Audio Midi
Setup to rule out a sampling rate problem.

(So turn off your welcome notification sound, then relaunch Entourage 2008.
Choose Entourage > Preference > Notifications. You'll be able to play all of
the sounds by clicking the speaker icons. Once an action triggers one of
these sounds, no sounds will ever be played again. So...the sounds are there
and you can hear them...until the first sound is triggered.)

To answer these issues.
1. The sounds not working in the preferences pane is part of the general
issue with notification sounds, same code path and once they stop working it
also stops in the prefs pane.  Also the startup sound does not cause this
problem to occur, see my other mail for all the ones that do.
2. Correct about the link at the bottom of the page, I will pass this along.
3. This is populated by sound sets found in:  ~/Documents/Microsoft User
Data/Entourage Sound Sets

Clarification:

#1 below, I meant the issue with sound in the preferences is the same issue
in the other thread about sounds working once and then stopping.
#3 is about the drop down list, it only shows default for now, if you create
a new set of sounds in this folder in the proper format, then you will see
more options.  (There was another thread about future details on creating
sound sets pending.)

I know this will sound silly, but one of the main reasons I upgraded
to MS Office 2008 was to get a quicker version of Entourage because of
it being universal.  Another sort of silly fact is that I liked the
custom sounds I had created with Entourage 2004, which is what made me
prefer Entourage over Mail...  Now, with Leopard, you can't use custom
sounds with Entourage.  I sure hope someone figures this out soon...
I want my notification sounds back!

When can we expect an update that will fix the notification issue?
Will it be a real long wait?
AlphaBovine@officeformac.com - 23 Jan 2008 13:57 GMT
My guess is that Mac BU will release a patch that will fix a lot of the most common issues are people are facing and I also further a guess that a lot of the issues stem with Leopard. It wouldn't make sense to take the time to have patch go through testing, certification and then distribution for something as small as a sound bug.

From my days as a tester it will more than likely encompass the sound issue, the missing TTF Fonts, Sync issues and basic stability issues. Considering the time it takes for Microsoft to test and certify updates to their products my guess is either mid to late February for the first patch or even early March if there is a log of desk head banging going.

In the mean time I would just be patient and if it is the only problem you have with the program consider yourself lucky and realize this is what happens when you by a X.0 program and not a x.1 or x.2.
tethead@gmail.com - 23 Jan 2008 21:36 GMT
well, at the least, this is quite an annoyance IMO.  not a show-
stopping bug, that's for sure, but not having sound notification in
Leopard is unexpected, and i would have thought M$ could have tested
this a bit better instead of trying to meet their shipping deadline of
MWSF.
gracie@officeformac.com - 23 Jan 2008 22:52 GMT
Bugged about the lack of sounds after installing Office 2008 so am relieved to find you all here with the same problem. I guess my answer is.... wait till they offer an upgrade.

Now if someone can tell me how to alphabetize the address book by first name, my life would be complete.
mortfe@officeformac.com - 23 Jan 2008 22:59 GMT
I agree with tethead, but don't think Microsoft gives a damn about mac users. 4 years before an upgrade to 2008. I'm sure it will be part of a pkg update. Wonder if anyone has tried calling tech support. But I'm sure they BS as much as Apple does, blaiming everybody else.
AlphaBovine@officeformac.com - 24 Jan 2008 01:25 GMT
Ok, people lets keep this from degrading into an bitching fest against Mac BU. I am not defending them about the quality of work they do because I am not a programer and do not have the knowledge and or full experience to comprehend what it takes to reprogram an entire application set to work with XCode and then to make sure it is a true Universal Binary.

If you have a solution or an idea on how to fix the problem please post, if you have nothing relevant to say other than your gripes about buying a brand new release program then do everyone a favor and don't drag us all down to your level.
mortfe@officeformac.com - 24 Jan 2008 15:17 GMT
Wasn't bitching. Just don't think M$ will be in a hurry to fix this problem. They will wait for other problems to crop up and patch them all at once.

I've installed it on two machines (both running 10.5.1) and have the same problem (no notifications after initial) on both.

It's not an output volume problem and has nothing to do with custom sound sets.

I've gone back to '04 until this bug is fixed.

I also had this problem with the beta which i thought it was because its beta. so to shed out this money and purchase the full package is really annoying to say the least.
what more can i say other than THATS MICROSOFT FOR YOU?
looks like im gonna have to go back to 2004 for now, if Microsoft can't sort a simple problem like this before final release what else is wrong, i've heard just to many issues?

I gonna install a clean 10.5 on my other mac pro (currently running 10.4.11 and the sound works fine on office 2008) just to confirm if its a leopard and 2008 compatibility problem and will let you know in due course.

Hi Jason!

This is a known issue acknowledged by Microsoft in this very forum. Have

I has the same issues i.e. no sounds after upgrading from 2004 to
2008, and I simply solved the issue by quitting Entourage 2008,
trashing the "Entourage Sound Sets" folder inside the "Microsoft User

lplamondon, thanks for the tip but this did not work on my end. I did a restart as well just to make sure and the file was never recreated. Oddly enough without the sound file in there, I still received the welcome chime and first action sound but nothing afterword...this makes me wonder if the sounds for 2008 or in the Entourage Sound Set file anymore.

FOr testing purposes I also tried the same suggestion on my Desktop G4 (10.4.11) and the same thing. No file, but still the first few sounds. I restored the file for both the MacBook Pro and the Desktop G4 for now until this issue is finalized by Microsoft Tech Support or another suggestion comes along.

Any thought?

Just to all of you who might be reading this and just want to cut to answer rather than read this surprisingly long thread, the current solution is to wait for Microsoft MBU (Macintosh Business Unit for you rookies) to release the first patch for the program.

I have a problem with the sounds in Entourage, the notification sounds
work great but when a notification sound is played simultaniously you
hear an irritating sound together with the Entourage sound.. I didnt
had this in the beta of 2008.. Does anyone have the same problem?

Great info alouette... So to make a new sound set, couldn't we just
produce a new "mailsent.wav" file and replace it into this file?
bikinijack - 20 Jan 2008 21:18 GMT
I created my favorite sound set that is now working with Entourage
2008 (although we are still left with the Leopard issue of the sounds
stopping to work after a while, hopefully that will get fixed soon).
Here is what I did to get my old customs sound set up and working:

1)    Play sound from sound set on Expression X (I used this to create
the original sound set)
2)    Record sound on Audio Hijack Pro
3)    Edit sound with Sound Studio, convert sound from mp3 to wav
4)    Put sound with same file name as Entourage sound file in the
following folder (example, name the new sent mail sound file
"mailsent.wav"): Microsoft Office 2008/Office/EntourageCore.framework/
Versions/12/Resources/

to find this folder on your computer, just do a spotlight search using
one of the files in the folder, such as "mailsent.wav"

Thanks again to alouette, I am almost a happy camper

Hey folks,

We DO NOT recommend modifying the sounds inside the application.  We do have
a new file format for the sound sets.  I'm working on a blog post
(http://www.ruffly.org -- will update soon, been a while ;) ) that details
the new format.

Okay, actually I figured out what that is, sorry. Just for the hell of it, I made copies of all those sounds and put them into the Entourage Sound Set folder. Interesting result: I'd get ONE sound. So if the first thing I did was check my mail, I'd get the new mail (or no mail) sound. But then I'd get no other sounds afterward. Restart the program, send a message, get the sent message sound, once. No other sound. Weird.

Hey Cuneytustalar,

Not sure on why the sound are like that, I don't think it is related to the sound issue. If you play them from the preferences pane or directly from Microsoft Office 2008/Office/EntourageCore.framework/Versions/12/Resources/ do they still sound distorted? It almost seems like something else on your system is messing with your sound output perhaps?

I am still using Tiger 10.4.11, and I can hear all the default alert sounds with all events, but none of my custom sound sets appear as additional choices in notification preferences, just 'default'. Tried deleting the sound sets folder, and default sounds still worked, so it looks like, as cited earlier here, that sounds are grabbed from the package now.

Seems Leopard users (only) need a fix to assure playing of event sounds always, and Tiger and Leopard users need some way to reclaim all those wonderful sound sets. I used Hal...

Patience...
cuneytustalar - 26 Jan 2008 11:43 GMT
Dougst,

When I play the wav files directly from Microsoft Office 2008/Office/EntourageCore.framework/Versions/12/Resources/ it sounds normal as it ought to be. So you might be right that there is a conflict somewhere in my system, maybe it is conflicting with an older version of Office. When I installed Office 2008 it asked me to check for older versions and to delete them, I did that.. I also used the Remove Office installer located somewhere in the old Office directory in the Applications section.
Can you please help me fix/solve this problem?
Cheers in advance.

Use a rule to run a custom sound.

See this page for using custom sounds with Entourage. You can even create
your own sounds or use computer voices to announce your mail. For example,
you could have the AppleScript say ³Mail from Dad².

I successfully replaced some of teh sounds by editing a sound file in Soundtrack Pro and saving it as a Wave 16 bit/ 48 Khz sound with the same names as in the Entourage sounds folder:

Microsoft Office 2008/Office/EntourageCore.framework/Versions/12/Resources/

mailsent.wav
newmail.wav
nomail.wav
welcome.wav
goodbye.wav
mailerror.wav
reminder.wav

just make sure the sound format and the name are the same. That's all in takes.

I still question Microsoft releasing this software with an option in Preferences for a different "sound set" to the default and have no explanation or guide as to HOW to create a different sound set.

Microsoft has a method to allow users to create their own soundsets for
Entourage 2008 but they're currently a little strapped in the
documentation department. Documentation is forthcoming.

Microsoft has acknowledged the problem. That's not to say it's
necessarily in their court to fix. Maybe this is an issue with how Mac
OS X handles certain files. That I don't know.

Until MS fixes the bug, I created a new rule. It applies to every incoming message, it's the first rule in the list, and in allows other rules to act on the message. The only action is to run an Applescript. The script looks like this:

tell application "Finder"
say "Mail has arrived." with Alex
end tell

How to write and save scripts, what to do if you don't have Alex (in Leopard), how to get this to apply to IMAP accounts, how to get it to apply to outgoing messages, and so much more, is left as an exercise for the reader.

@ PGB

Thank you for making your posting. It amazes me how much redundancy there is on this thread.
pam - 31 Jan 2008 14:34 GMT
Hey folks,

Borrowing PGB's idea, I created a Script that works. I made a playlist in iTunes with the "newmail" sound. Then I wrote this script:

tell application "iTunes"
play playlist "newmail"
end tell

Then I used that script as the "New Mail" rule in Entourage. Voila! That's all you need. I know there's a way to play individual songs in playlists, so all the Entourage sounds can be played for each but I haven't played with that yet.

Good luck.
mastergold@officeformac.com - 31 Jan 2008 19:29 GMT
mortfe: as far as creating the proper sound format you have to have some sound editing application that does that. See post above, again they have to match the Microsoft format and that is 16bit/44K and the file names have to be the same. I recommend backing up that folder of sounds before replacing them with your own.

As far as playing the sounds, yes, as it has been confirmed by many users it seems to work at the start and then playing the sounds disappears. Doesn't work consistently. Definitely a bug. Yes, users are bitching here because it is hard to stomach that a co. as huge as Microsoft with billions in the bank, thousands of workers, top engineers and developers can't get a simple thing like this to work. It's inconceivable and frankly there is no excuse for it. This is "release" software not a beta.

(BTW: just like this silly site refuses to remember my login info and I have to sign in every time, even though there is a checkbox to "remember me" - this is basic stuff that doesn't work. How do you expect people NOT to be pissed off?!?!)

Ok, time for an update to this little posting.

Alex, one of the staff at MBU has stated that they are aware of the issue and that they are working on a fix for the first update of Office 2008.

The specifics of this problem are not conclusively known as this problem is apparent on both Intel and Power PC platforms and 10.4.11 and 10.5.1. There is a scripting workaround posted a few jumps up and it is a good fix if you don't mind taking the time to do a few custom Automater scripts.

Otherwise, just wait patiently as a fix is coming. As for Microsoft not knowing about this, they read this forum every day (it is on their servers). :-)
Kimba@officeformac.com - 07 Feb 2008 15:20 GMT
I'm glad to find that others are having the problem. Turing up every sound file (input, output, alert, system) to the max still didn't give me any sounds. Now I've found out how much I depended on those audio cues. Bug fix in first update, please!

Same problem here..... It's incredible that they haven't fixed yet!
The new entourage is giving me many problems, even with sending email using my yahoo account! Some of then never reach the recipient. Any idea of how to solve it?
thanks!

That's ridiculous. There's nothing incredible about it. Office 2008 was
JUST RELEASED.  I expect them to take at least a month or two before
their first update is released.

Microsoft, when you read this please know that we proponents of Entourage (when we could easily switch to Mac's program Mail) really need the sounds. I run a busy company and am often in meetings in my office. I RELY on hearing a sound that a non-junk email has arrived.

I am experiencing this same sound problem in Word 2008. In Word 2004 I had my preference set to make a sound when saving a document. This sound no longer works. The problems must be related. Anyone else having this issue in Word or Excel?

Before the sound problem, I've used custom sounds with rules in Entourage. I
use these specific sounds for special mails. Examples:

If mail is from:

a buddy... I hear the spoken text "buddy"
a friend... I hear spoken text "friends"
Work category... I hear the "ships bell sound"
Support work....the quack sound
Family...the "You've got mail"
Alerts....the alert sound...easy to hear this one in another room

The combination of spoken word and sounds makes it easy to identify the
notification. Too many just sounds will start getting confusion, at least it
is for me.

Starting to get the picture of how useful this could be?

See this page for using custom sounds with Entourage. You can even create
your own sounds or use computer voices to announce your mail. For example,
you could have the AppleScript say ³Mail from Dad².

Rule to Play Sound

I made a lot of these sounds available for downloading including the
AppleScripts to run them. Screenshots show how to create the rule.

I've just read a month's worth of comments regarding Entourage 2008 sounds and lack thereof. I've installed Office 2008 yesterday and immediately noticed this problem (DUH!). I have an intel iMac and Leopard 10.5.1. After paying $150 for the student edition, I'm very disappointed that Microsoft would release this product with a know bug. In my case, the preferences panel only list "default sounds" where Entourage 2004 listed three choices. After a month's postings, I've yet to read a posting from Entourage or Microsoft that would acknowledge this problem and offer some hope for a fix. In my case, that would go a long way in giving me hope that someone gives a damn. All the suggestions for workarounds are admirable but do little to solve this basic problem.

I also noticed my email fonts have increased by one size, without any prodding from me.

Like other posters, I didn't trash my Office 2004 when asked. I shudder to think what I might have lost had I done that.

I was to fast - same Problem after 2 incoming Mails
Stargate - 13 Feb 2008 20:43 GMT
This seemed to work for me.

1) Pressed Command+K to receive all e-mail.

2) While e-mail was being checked, I immediately opened up the Preferences window in Entourage 2008.

3) While the screen was flashing as a notification of "no e-mail", I unchecked and checked the six sounds in the notification sound set.

4) After closing the Preferences window, I checked my e-mail again (Command+K) -- and the sounds went back.

I haven't quit yet so I don't know if I'd have to do this every time I start the program. I just put my MacBook to sleep when I need to move about with it, so I don't restart or shutdown that often.

I hope someone else can replicate this.

Thank you so much, Diane! =) Yes, MP3 files would be handy. Hopefully we users will not have to 'package' them specially. We simply want to put those MP3s into certain subfolders where they simply work. Easily. And nothing else matters.

I'm looking forward...

By the way: On the whole, the new EntourageMac2008 is great (the best so far)! Just one last thing: In the font size options, we can choose e.g. 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9 and 7, but not '8'. Why, why, why? '8' would be my absolute favourite! 7 is too small and 9 is too large. A fix here would do it, too...

Thanks again...

I think there will be a .plist file to modify. I just use them so I'm' not

The only suggestion I have is to select a different font. I really like the
new fonts that came with Entourage 2008. The Installing 2008 blog article

Yes, Diane!
Easy to use:

Open ScriptEditor ...
write a simple AppleScript with the 'say' command ...
save it as .scpt into the soundset folder ...
open Entourage ...
create a rule and combine it with the .scpt ...

Now Entourage speaks.
Spoken words are the best sounds!
Test and enjoy ...

Something else to add to the thread. I have an iMAC and a MacBook. iMAC was installed with Office 2004 and then upgraded to Office 2008... no sound in entourage. I formatted the MacBook and installed Office 2008 afresh, the sounds in entourage works!. Is there something left behind from Office 2004 that causes a conflict?.
Yasmin Hashmi - 20 Feb 2008 11:48 GMT
After 7 years thrashing my old Mac G4 to death, I just bought a new iMac with OSx 10.5.1, and bought Entourage. The first notification sound works, then nothing. I don't have time to customise sounds or fiddle about - it's time-consuming enough transferring/converting files from my old Mac, especially Outlook Express messages! Anyway, I just want the thing to work as it is supposed to, and feel reassured that I am not alone. I look forward to the bug fix. Will we be notified, or how will we know?
Cberrien - 20 Feb 2008 19:55 GMT
Diane..Thank you for all your instructions on laoding custom sound files into entourage. I have tried doing exactly what you recommended...but when I run the scripts I get: Applescript error: File Macintosh HD:Users:curtisberrien:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Custom Sounds:alert.aiff wasn’t found.
aiff files are where they are supposed to be.

I would be nice if we were notified when a fix to this bug is posted ...
AlphaBovine@officeformac.com - 04 Mar 2008 19:09 GMT
Well, since I started this I might as well add another two cents.

For anyone who reads the press releases and the blog by the dev team, you will not that the first patch for Office '08 is due out on the 11th or March or sometime very close to that. Details on which bugs are going to be fixed on this patch are not known, but I think it is a safe bet that since this is one of the most popular threads on the Entourage forum that it is in there.

Be patient and just remember that a 1.0 release is never perfect and just be glad that this release has good smoothly unlike the Windows version or even Vista. (do not start threading on how wrong or right I am, it was just a point for thought.)
rfelgueiras - 05 Mar 2008 22:17 GMT
for the record, I took the sound files from:

Microsoft Office 2008/Office/EntourageCore.framework/Versions/12/Resources/

mailsent.wav
newmail.wav
nomail.wav
welcome.wav
goodbye.wav
mailerror.wav
reminder.wav

and copied them to the "Entourage Sound Set" folder in username/documents/microsoft user data/Entourage Sound Sets and just left them as .wav files there and restarted Entourage and my sounds all work now.
MWGassen@officeformac.com - 06 Mar 2008 17:14 GMT
Copying the sounds to your current Microsoft User Data folder, from the resources folder does work.

It would appear to me that the sounds break, after importing, and/or copying the Microsoft User Data file from an older version.

You may be correct
gotart@officeformac.com - 07 Mar 2008 08:38 GMT
See my recent post 03.07.2008 about the no sound notification problem. I have done extensive testing on this.
Entourage 2008 work in Tiger but not in Leopard. The sounds are WAVE sounds located in the core framework in the Resources folder. The are not the same sound codecs as in the 2004 or 2001. 2008 will not use your sound sets from 2004. They are the more popular WAVE audio files.
If yo email me I can give you the direct folder hierarchy as to where the sound files are.
I too rely on these sounds to notify me when email arrives. I have gone back to Entourage 2004 until Microsoft fixes this problem.

Check to see if "About Entourage" shows 12.0.1 or 12.0.0. It's possible your

I just found the way to fix it. Go to the link below to download a sound set file and put in in your Microsoft User Data > Entourage Sound Sets. Before you put the file into this folder, drag any file out first (no file in this folder). Then run a test by go to Entourage > Preferences > Notification. Click on the sound icon to hear the sound. If you can hear the sound that means you got it right. If not try to quit the program and redo it one more time.
Good Luck!

I downloaded the Sorapin sound set and nothing.
Every try just makes it work for a little time. Then sounds are gone
again.

Could anyone post a working "Entourage Sound Set"?

Have you upgraded to 12.0.1? This fixed the problem.

I have a Powerbook Intel Core Duo running 10.5.2 and installed 12.0.1 to Entourage. The sounds came back immediately and worked fine everyday until a week ago for no apparent reason. I have tried all the above downloads and suggestions and tried to re install 12.0.1 but it won't re update as it already detects it is there.

To uninstall the 12.0.1 update, MS Help suggests deleting MS Office and starting all over again.

Anybody find a permanent fix yet?

Many thanks - Tony - orlando, Fl

The recently-released (May 14th) SP1 fixed this problem for me. Install it and give it a try. FYI - installing SP1 was easy but at first it appeared that the problem wasn't fixed. I rebooted just to see if would make a difference and when it came back up all the notification sounds were there so you may need to reboot after installing SP1 to fix this particular problem.

Hope that works for you.

Am I to believe that Microsoft does not know of this sound-set issue? They do frequent this forum. Why can't they make a statement or issue a patch/update is beyond me…a non-gazillion making software making behemoth. These companies make me sick.

This was fixed in the update. Make sure you are updated to 12.1.0.

> Knock knock--Microsoft, are you out there? Next Entourage update should include a sound set converter. We will look away from this Vista thingy for a while if you do put in a soundset converter for Entourage.

First, please keep in mind that these newsgroups are peer-to-peer. There
isn't much we can do. The best way is to send feedback to Microsoft .

When working in Office, you can use the ³Send Feedback² option under the
Help menu in all of the Office applications.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling. If that doesn't work, try calling Microsoft.

Yes you must install the first update to 2008 that came out I think 3/11- it is version 12.01
The latest version 12.10 that came out about a week ago is giving my people problems. If you can find the first update that would be good.
That will correct your sound problem.

not sure if this will work for everyone or if it's even the case.

there may be an issue with the audio set up that can be tweaked as
discussed in the below article

This is not the fix for Entourage 2008. The sound problem was fixed in an
update.

I've just spent over half an hour installing the updates, hoping that the sound set would be in the updates. It was not. In the sound choice window, "default" is the only choice and it makes no sound. How hard could this be to fix? I depend on it.

Have you restarted? In System Preferences check to make sure your sound
setting are correct.

Believe me it was fixed. Before it every other post on this newsgroup was
about the sound problem.

It appears the fix occurred with update 12.0.1

But in my case, when I first installed Office 2008, the update offered
was a later  one: 12.1.0.
I recently updated with 12.1.1 but the sound problem persists.

I wonder if updating 12.0.1 is critical to have this fixed. Maybe the
later updates alone (12.1.0 and 12.1.1) do not address the sound
issue?

If this is the case, I may need to reinstall, grab 12.0.1 at Microsoft
and only then move up to later updates.

Any opinions?
Diane Ross - 30 Jun 2008 06:41 GMT
The 12.1.0 is a combo updater and included 12.0.1. Restarting and running
Repair Permissions might fix the problem. Also running the latest Apple
combo might help.

You need to determine if the problem is your Identity, your User folder or
the base system files.

See this page for testing steps:

Not just his, but mine also, and in multiple users. Sounds disappear after sleep or switching to another user and then switching back.

The toolbar changes depending on what view you are in. If you are in Tasks
for example, clicking on New gets you a new Task.

I saw that as well. Then I discoverd that the toolbar can be set up for
each view. For example, in the 'Compose' view, click on the Customize
Toolbar in the View menu. Now drag onto your toolbar whatever you want
     for that view.
