IMAP Inboxes not consistently receiving new email without manual intervention

OK, I've has this problem since Entourage 2004 was released, and have just
lived with it, hoping for a fix with each Entourage update.

I have multiple IMAP and POP accounts configured.  I have a custom mail view
called "All Inboxes" that shows the contents of all my mail account inboxes
in one view (similar to the way Apple Mail groups all inbox messages
together).

In Entourage X, this worked absolutely great.  I could leave "All Inboxes"
selected, and every time a new message came into any Inbox, the view would
update and I would see my new mail in the custom view.

This has never worked consistently in Entourage 2004.  It sometimes takes
messages over an hour to appear in the custom view.  At first I thought it
was a problem with the Mail View not updating automatically, but now believe
it is an IMAP account problem.  The same thing happens if I select an Inbox
under any IMAP email account.  I often times have to click off of the Inbox,
then click back on it for the new messages to show up.  I've tried every
possible combination of settings "Live Sync - stay connected", etc. with no
luck.  My send receive scheudle is running every 2 minutes, so that is not
the problem.

I've read other people having similar issues, and the comments I've seen
indicate that Microsoft knows there is a problem with the IMAP
implementation in Entourage 2004, but don't plan to have it fixed until the
next office release.

I'm posting this to see if other people have experienced this problem as
well.  Maybe there is something I'm missing, but just want to get some input
from others ...

Thanks -

Anyone able to comment on this issue?

Thanks!

One solution I found for my problem is to uncheck the settings, "Send
commands to server simultaneously," which is located in the Options tab of
your Account setup window.

That seemed to do it for me. Your mileage may vary.

You mean other than what I already posted in a previous message about
changing a preference setting?

Sorry for the repost Gene ...

I did try unchecking the "Send commands to server simultaneously", and still
have the same problem.  I've tried about every possible combination of
settings (including "Live Sync - Stay connected to server") and nothing
seems to work.  The only way I can reliably get messages is to go and
manually click each Inbox for each IMAP account every so often, then the new
messages show up.  I can't believe something this basic doesn't work.

I'm strongly considering going back to Entourage X permanently ... I have it
installed and running, and it works perfectly.  How can a bug like this
still exist in 2004?  Anyone have any more experience with this, or am I the
only one using multiple IMAP accounts?

Thanks for listening!

- Tim

I have six IMAP accounts I access this way. Other than making sure that all
the settings are identical, I'd suggest you consider deleting preferences,
rebuilding the database and the rest of the usual stuff.

And upgrading to the latest Mac OS -- 10.4.8, if you haven't done so
already. Since I made the change here, it works pretty well on both a Power
Mac G5 Quad and a 17-inch MacBook Pro.

What can I say?
