Hi there, having got my release code working with thanks to the group I
am now searching for info on the best installer to use.

We have two needs:

1. For a web download to install an application which each time it is
run can search for new releases of itself and its assets.  Hopefully
then do a minimal download to patch itself up to latest release standard.

2. For a hybrid CD-ROM installation to the mac.  The main requirement
here is to be able to download a mac specific application from the disk
and then simply copy a number of assets directly from the CD-ROM in
uncompressed form (because they are shared to the PC version, eg JPGs).

installers that simply pack everything into one great file are no good
you see because there would not be enough room on the cd-rom for both pc
and mac versions.

Any pointers would be appreciated and a virtual beer will be sent to you!

many thanks

One thing Mac's seem to lack is a good online patching installer. Windows
has more of that (for a price) + ActiveX controls that make a web install
simpler to do.

I used to put out hybrid CD installs for my company, that offered several
overlapping sets out of about 5000 asset files. Pretty much any installer
that can copy external files will work: you might even try the Apple package
installer w/ some scripts. I wrote ours from scratch to get OS9 + simple
patching, but I don't recommend that (like many internal tools, it was too
much trouble to maintain and got hackier and hackier over time.)

One thing I discovered about hybrid CD's is that they tend to work better if
burned from OS9. YMMV, but Toast on OS9 did a better job of locating the
files I wanted to be visible where I wanted them, and Toast on OSX wasn't
really stable enough to use at the time anyway.
